Together, we are changing the future

(WUIP) Steering Committee, I would like to thank the many supporters and volunteers who helped raise nearly $140,000 in 2010, supporting school readiness programs, a critical determinate in building self-esteem and contributing to a child's ability to reach their potential. Your generosity, passion and dedication are helping change our community's future. Thank you! In 2010, we were thrilled to host several fashionable and impactful fundraisers, including the Walk in their Shoes luncheon. Here guests heard from leading experts about what early childhood vulnerability means on a social and economical level. Leading care giving and family policy thinker, Dr. Paul Kershaw (UBC Human Early Learning Partnership), gave a keynote highlighting the societal cost of early childhood vulnerability. He then joined a panel of experts including Janet Austin (YWCA), Chris Kelly (Dalai Lama Centre) and Michael McKnight (United Way), who helped bring to light the role we can all play in shaping the future for at-risk children. WUIP has an incredible opportunity to help make a difference in the lives of thousands of children in the Lower Mainland. We hope you continue to support this powerful initiative and invest in United Way programs that help parents offer their children the skills and opportunities to be successful. We thank you for your continued support and generosity. Catherine Van Alstine Chair, Women United in Philanthropy Steering Committee

Spring 2011

30% of kids in BC arrive at kindergarten struggling with the basics.

Studies show that the first six years of life are critical to a child's long-term success. Children who do not have the right start in their early years are often put at a disadvantage for their entire lives, never able to escape the downward cycle of poverty, neglect, hunger and illiteracy. By supporting

, you are helping prevent issues such as high school drop-out, youth crime, unemployment, teen pregnancy, poor health and improve overall life chances for these children as they grow into teenagers and adults.
