Hockey world has heart
Support for Sugdenfrom top down
Brandon Sugden's phone was ringing off the hook yesterday but it was one call that made the hair on the back of his neck stand up. "Brandon, it's Bill Daly.? Normally when the deputy commissioner of any league calls the hockey enforcer, known as "Sugar,? it's bad news. "I remember a few calls from OHL commissioner Dave Branch,? laughs Sugden. "When I heard it was Bill Daly I have to admit I was pretty nervous.? But this was good news. Turns out Daly is up on his plight and is all over it. For those who don't know, the 30-year-old Toronto native is deemed ineligible to play this year after signingretirement papers in 2006. He failed to realize that signing the papers would prohibit him from playing in the semi-pro beer league in Quebec, where he put in 40 games last season. A minorleague tough guy for 10 years, who has never played in an NHL game, he got a sniff of the dream when the New York Islanders invited him to their camp next week. He vowed to win the fighter's job so his terminally ill dad, Travis, can see him wear an NHL sweater. The problem is this glitch means he has to sit out a year unless all 30 teams agreed to reinstate him. Four teams did not. But they also did not know his cir-

PETE BEST Original BeatleplaysMississauga cumstances. They do now. "Bill said he will talk to the teams this weekend,? said Brandon. "He said he can't make any promises but I just want to thank him and all of the people who have helped here.? They are numerous. Former Islander's media guy Chris Botta, of NYI Point Blank blog, broke the story I heard on AM 640 on Leaf's Lunch with Darren Dreger and Bill Watters. Our editors put it on the front page. Glenn Healy of the NHLPA has been supportive, and now ESPNSportsCentre is doing something, as it hockey writing legend Stan Fischler. So many want to see this happen - not just for Brandon but for his dad. "I can't believe the support I received,? said Brandon, who had more than 12,000 hits on his website yesterday. The two things I want are to see dad Travis at Brandon's first NHL game and later to watch him smile as they put his son's picture up on the Wall of Fame at the St. Michael's arena with other alumni who have made The Show. n n n Pete Best finally returned to Abbey Road. Not the famous London recording studio but the famous Mississauga pub where the former Beatle's band played to a packed house Wednesday. His is a fascinating tale, in that he missed the biggest entertainment ride in history SUN FILE PHOTOS Pickering's Bianca Zenia, above, is fl attered (and amused) that Gene Simmons mistook her for Kim Kardashian, right. CRAIG ROBERTSON/SUN MEDIA Yanka Van der Kolk is ecstatic that someone found one last package of Polaroid fi lm for her. It's no longer manufactured. CRAIG ROBERTSON/SUN MEDIA Film festival friends and colleagues of the late Dusty Cohl gather around a portrait of him with a bottle of Crown Royal. by four weeks when he was fired and replaced by Ringo Starr - and yet he never quit. Before Ringo, he played with the Fab Four, but now often plays in front of 150 people - all of whom realize if there had been no Best there may have been no Beatles. Their early gigs were at the Casbah, a teen club in the basement of his mom Mona's house. In Mississagua, the packed house loved the band and particularly enjoyed watching an original Beatle in action. He will play at Hamilton Place on Sept. 20. Beatles tribute band, Daytripper, will play at SUDGEN Support pours in the Abbey Road Sept. 26th. n n n Turns out that was not actress KimKardashian whom Kiss' Gene Simmons was chatting up at a party. It was Pickering actress Bianca Zenia. "Hi, Kim, what are you doing here?? Zenia quoted the rocker as saying. "I started laughing.? n n n In 33 years, former model Yanka Van der Kolk has shot 30,000 Polaroid images of stars from inside the parties. The problem in 2008 is there's no Polaroid film around any more. But at the last second, like finding the Holy Grail, one last package was found in a storage locker. Yanka was in business for 10 more shots. And another era faded into the sunset. n n n Shocking to hear that legendary Chicago Sun-Times film critic Roger Ebert was "whacked? with a program by a fellow critic after Ebert tapped him on the shoulder so he could see the subtitles at at TIFF showing. Ebert, here after horrendous health issues and major surgeries, can no longer talk. It was not a local scribe who screamed "don't touch me? and struck him but I still want Ebert to know we in Toronto feel terrible he was treated this way. He is a friend to this city and helped put the film festival on the map. His friend, cofounder Dusty Cohl, must be rolling in his grave. Ebert, though, in the Sun- Times, seems to be taking it in stride. "I have had my problems, but I promise you I am plenty hearty enough to withstand a smack,? he wrote. "There was no pain. The incident is over.? The New York writer who did this is still a creep in my view. That was the low point this year. The high point was when fellow co-founders Bill Marshall, HankVan der Kolk and others raised a bottle of Crown Royal on Toronto St. and toasted Dusty, who was lost to cancer earlier this year. It was the first festival without him. Dusty and his famous hat will always be part of the festival - as will Roger Ebert. As for the bully who did that to him, try that on me next year. Enjoy your weekend, everyone. Scrawler out!
