Family of fi rst student killed at Columbine carries on her message

By Donna Delaurier The images on the screen were shocking ? as shocking today as they were 11 years ago when Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris opened fire and killed 12 students and one teacher at Columbine High School in Colorado. Many of the students from Edward Schreyer and Gillis schools watching the video during last Thursday?s presentation of Rachel?s Challenge aren?t even old enough to remember the Columbine tragedy, and yet the message from Rachel Scott ? the first student shot and killed ? delivered by friends, family and classmates, resonates even to them. Th e sight of students barely older than themselves being pushed into waiting ambulances with oxygen masks on their faces and blood staining their clothing had the young crowd silenced from start to fi nish. Brandie Orozco showed the video and spoke to the students as part of Rachel?s Challenge ? an organization started by Scott?s family and friends.
