Acoustics guide goes to market

The long awaited AIS 'A guide to office acoustics' will be launched at the AIS AGM and members' meeting on 18 May at the RAF Museum in London (see page 3). Working with members and other industry experts, AIS has developed the acoustic guide to promote best practice in the design and installation of acoustic solutions in offices. Commenting on the guide, which has been awarded RIBA CPD Accreditation, RIBA said: 'This guide is attractive and well structured. It encompasses a wide range of issues, which are well illustrated with numerous photos and diagrams. A scholarly work on a complex subject.' AIS technical manager Joe Cilia is currently touring the UK introducing the guide to interested parties including clients, architects and acousticians. Commenting, he said: 'AIS recognised the need for an in depth guide on acoustics in commercial office environments some time ago. The resulting guide is the

The shortlist for the Interior Fit Outs category of the 2011 AIS Contractors Awards has been announced. The judges commented: 'The standard of the entries as always was exceptionally high. If your contract didn't make the shortlist, don't be disappointed. It's not that it wasn't good enough, it's just there were entries that were even better!' The winners will be chosen by Bamber & Reddan Architects' founder Cyril Reddan. Cyril will visit all eight contracts in April and announce the winners at the AIS President's Lunch on 14 June. These points have also been produced as a handy folding wallchart. Copies of the guide will be available from 18 May at a cost of £35, and it is viewable at www.acousticguide.org 10 facts about acoustics 1 Sound can be controlled by absorption, insulation and diffusion. 2 Sound energy is converted into heat when it is absorbed by a product. It would be possible to heat a cup of water by talking but it is likely to take over five months to do it! 3 We perceive a rise of 10dB as a doubling of sound, 30dB is perceived as being twice as loud as 20dB, and 40dB is four times louder. A night club is about 100dBA. The threshold for pain is about 120dBA. 6 People lose the ability to hear high frequency sound with age. For example a dog whistle at 12kHz might be heard by children, but not their grandparents. 7 Rooms should be as airtight as possible, in addition to ensuring the correct products are installed to achieve the best sound insulation. 8 The performance of a partition to achieve privacy can be calculated from its sound insulation value added to the background sound level. Anything over 75 is good. 9 Conversation needs to be 10-15dB above the background noise level to be understood. 10 Diffusion, spreads the sound evenly within the space (important for auditoria).
