With the 2008 Utah?s Governor?s tag Troy Christensen connected on this massive 35-inch mule deer The title of this hunting story sums up the completion of a goal I?ve had for the past seven years; in the end, it was a dream come true. In January of 2008, I was the lucky bidder for the Utah Conservation Tag, most commonly referred to as the Governor?s Tag. It is commonly said, ?Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it.? What a problem to have huh? In my case, it was totally awesome! I HUNTING ILLUSTRATED.com was going to be able to hunt anywhere in the state of Utah that I wanted to, except private land of course. I would also be able to hunt from September 1st to January 15th. Now how is that for a dream come true? As with any good dream, I had already picked out where I was going to start looking - the Henry Mountains, of course. And, because it was such a coveted tag, I knew I had to get one of the best guides in the state. I chose

Rod Steele of Christensen Outdoors Guides and Outfi tters. I chose Rod because I have seen the bucks that he and his team of guides and their hunters have been killing. The previous season, Rod?s clients had taken four bucks over 200. When it comes to the Henry Mountains, Rod knows his stuff. Rod and I concentrated the entire summer on the Henry Mountain unit; yet, we couldn?t fi nd a buck that we thought was worthy of the Governor?s Tag. We saw a few Boone and Crockett bucks, but nothing I was too excited about hunting. My expectations for this hunt were high, but not unrealistic. If I was to shoot a typical buck, I hoped to take down the new state record. I was hoping for something in the 250-class for a non-typical.
