Rest in peace Tata

ROMITA HANUMAN WE have watched him get up when he was down, rise to great heights, touch the country and the world, and we have watched him succumb to an illness. No matter how prepared we were, it still felt like a stab in the heart when it was announced that former President and global icon, Nelson Mandela had passed away. EThekwini Municipality is currently running a memorial programme to remember this great man, and to continue his legacy. The Durban City Hall was abuzz with activity at the start of this week, with a Special Full Council sitting in Madiba?s honour. The day began with a flowerlaying ceremony led by Mayor James Nxumalo, the Executive Committee members and MEC for Health, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo. Councillors and members of the public also wrote messages of support in the special Nelson Mandela condolences book. Dhlomo explained the impact of Mandela?s actions on the world. ?We salute Nelson Mandela. He is a worldwide icon known for his passionate nature and messages on peace, non-violence and forgiveness. Who can go through so much and still forgive those that locked him up? He is an inspiration and his legacy will live on.? Mayor James Nxumalo said Madiba inspired him and remembered when he first shook the icon?s hands. ?It is a memory I will never forget. I feel blessed and privileged to have met him and we must all adopt his attitude in everything we do.? ?President Nelson Mandela has a special place in all our hearts here in eThekwini, in KwaZulu-Natal, in South Africa as a whole and the entire world. His life achievements are well documented for all to see and today ours is to pay tribute. Our fondest memory of him was in 1994, during the first democratic elections when he cast his first democratic vote at Ohlange.? Nxumalo said, ?As the Mayor of this Municipality I wish to move a motion in the next seating of this august house to build a monumental symbol that all generations to come may draw strength and be reminded of this giant who lived a life worthy to be replicated by all.? Sydenham resident Ntombiyempi Gumede wrote a message in the condolences book and explained why Madiba is important to her. ?I feel very hurt that he has left this earth, but I am happy to say that he has made a difference in our country. We are a free nation and we have equal rights. This is important and his selflessness and forgiving nature is what I will cherish the most.? romita.hanuman@durban.gov.za
