CIPS accredits IT programs in the UAE
The HCT Dubai Women's campus. Earlier this year, the Canadian Information Processing Society (CIPS) was invited to review the Higher Diploma and Bachelor of Applied Science programs offered by the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT). The HCT was established in 1988, and is the largest institution of higher learning in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with over 16,500 students spread over 14 campuses. The HCT is one of several postsecondary institutions which have been established to provide education to Emerati students and to serve the needs of Page 1 Association of Accrediting Agencies of Canada WINTER 2010 the fast-growing nation. Emerati nationals can attend the government tertiary-level institutions, including HCT, free of charge. Starting in 2006/2007, expatriate students may attend these government institutions on a fee-paying basis. The HCT provides college level education in business, education, engineering technology, information technology, communications technology and health sciences to citizens of the UAE. English is used as the medium of instruction, with faculty recruited from around the world. As an institution, HCT

is not an agent of change ? in particular, and in conformance with the cultural environment prevalent in the UAE, there is a level of gender segregation; there are separate colleges for women and men, for the most part occupying separate campuses. The accreditation visit took place over the course of one week, and the site visit team of eight members undertook half-day site visits to all 14 of the colleges offering programs under assessment. The conclusion of the review was the successful accreditation of all programs under review. The Chancellor of the HCT, His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, was very pleased with the accreditation. ?This is a major accomplishment for HCT as the accreditation for the information technology programs demonstrates that HCT programs demonstrate world class standards for education in information technology programs,? he stated.
