Letters to the Editor:

RE: Aéroports de Montréal's rail shuttle seems to have upper hand Dear Editor, Hopefully the Quebec government will favour the CP route over the more expensive and longer CN line for the proposed West Island Rail Express. Aéroports de Montréal (ADM), wants to run its exclusive shuttles to Central Station as it is closer to major hotels and the hustle and bustle of Downtown. However, the centre of economic enterprise has changed over time. Initially Downtown railway activity was located near the Old Port: Viger and Moreau stations and several other railway terminals were located near the harbour. Windsor Street Station opened in 1889 and soon became the gateway to Montreal. Windsor overshadowed its adjacent neighbour to the south, Bonaventure Station. Central was only opened in 1943. This is a far cry from the scuttled plans for a Union Station in the 1920s. Windsor was integral to Montreal. The Queen's, Laurentian, Windsor and Château Champlain Hotels were located nearby. Jointly operated CN and CP Pool Trains to Toronto used Windsor as their terminus till 1966. American Customs and Immigration services were located there for US bound passengers. Unfortunately, the Rail Shuttle project has become a battle between two unelected bodies ADM vs. AMT and two real estate titans Homburg, (owner of Central Station), vs. Cadillac Fairview, (owner of Windsor Station). We must not lose site that improving local transit from the West Island and NDG is most important. To argue that Windsor Station cannot be a dynamic transportation hub again is very shortsighted. Yours Sincerely, Avrom David Shtern, Cote Saint Luc Volunteer West Island's 10th annual Golf Tournament Dear Editor, Volunteer West Island's 10th Annual Charity Golf Tournament will take place Monday, June 21st at the Whitlock Golf and Country Club in Hudson. This is Volunteer West Island's only fund-raising event of the year and we need your help. Volunteer West Island, itself a non-profit organization and the only volunteer recruitment organization in the West Island, has been helping the community since 1967. Volunteer West Island promotes volunteerism by recruiting, training, and referring volunteers for many community organizations in the West Island. In addition, Volunteer West Island offers both outreach and on-site programs and services aimed at breaking the isolation seniors often face and helping them remain in their own homes, enjoying as high a quality of life and autonomy as long as possible. All proceeds from our charity golf tournament will be used to support our programs aimed at breaking isolation for West Island seniors. For more information please consult our web site www.cabvwi.org. Sincerely yours, Volunteer West Island

The ABC Ball for The Children's raises $765,000

Premier Jean Charest and his wife, Michèle Dionne, as Patrons of Honour

The ABC Ball for The Children's, held by The Montreal Children's Hospital Foundation, took place on May 27 at Windsor Station. With Québec Premier Jean Charest and his wife, Michèle Dionne, as Patrons of Honour, the event brought together more than 500 guests, and raised $765,000 for the construction of the new Children's on the Glen Campus. Each year, the ABC Ball recognizes ten remarkable people for their contributions to The Montreal Chil- dren's Hospital, its patients and their families. The Awards of Excellence Ceremony was hosted by Marianna Simeone, of CBC News Montreal, and actor Rémy Girard, while the remainder of the evening was hosted by actor Chantal Lamarre and entertainment reporter Mosé Persico. Rio Tinto Alcan, one of the ten Awards of Excellence sponsors, took advantage of the event to announce a generous donation of $2.5 million to The Best Care for Children Campaign.
