Welcome to Camp St. James, a summer ritual for more than 160 children and grandchildren of members of The Clubs at St. James. The four-day camps included tennis or golf instructions, along with swimming and other events that combine fun with valuable life lessons. "All the instructors are either golf or tennis pros at St. James,? said Camp Director Sara "Cassi? Williams. "And we maintain a five to one campers-to-instructor ratio so everyone gets a lot of individual attention.? Camps generally run from mid-June to mid-August, and are held Mondays through Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Ages of the campers are six through 12 and many return year after year. "We have four returning campers from London,? Cassi said. "Their grandparents live here.? Campers receive instructions in either golf or tennis in the mornings, enjoy a skill challenge such as a long-drive or putting contest, and then break for lunch. followed by a cool down period and then it's time to hit the pool. That's followed by a snack period featuring snacks made by the campers, and then it's a rehash of the day's instructions. Each camp also works on one craft project. "The first priority is to have fun,? Cassi said. "But we hope to instill an appreciation of the game, the proper techniques, rules and etiquette.? Camps are held at the Members or Founders Clubs, with most of the golf instructions taking place on the practice facilities. The last day of camp is a skills challenge. "It's summer, which is the time for kids to be kids,? said Cassi. "They encounter new experiences, but we always make it fun!? Registration for the 2009 camps will commence in March.
