CSL ABSTRACT PAINTING EXHIBIT

Côte St. Luc?s Eleanor London Library is featuring an exhibition of abstract paintings called Deluge by artist Justin Burnham, which began March 4 and runs until April 11, the library announced. ?Deluge is an exhibition of paintings on canvas and found glass, which evoke the vibrancy and fluidity of water in motion,? says a library announcement. ?Are we looking down on the swirling confusion of the earth from above, or seeing the hidden realms below the surface? In either case, Burnham?s paintings call to mind water in its many forms and seasons.? For more information, call 514-485-6900.

Bless this elevator?

By P.A. Sévigny The Suburban ... and all those who use it! At least that?s what Father Jim MacDonald probably meant when he blessed the new elevator in St. Gabriel?s during last Sunday?s mass. For as Bob Dylan once put it, ?The times, they are a-changing,? and this church knew it had to undergo major renovations to better serve its aging congregation ? especially those plagued with mobility problems and chronic health issues. Over the past few years, a growing number of the congregations were having trouble dealing with the stairs leading to the church doors. While long imposing stairways often played an important role in Quebec?s traditional church architecture, few, if any, of the period?s architects ever thought about the sick, the invalid and the lame who would sometimes wish to climb those stairs. Now it?s a new century and to its credit, people do think of those for whom a physical challenge is a daily reality. The parish knew it had to do something to help its own congregation. ?It was more than just a project,? said architect Frank MacMahon as he took the elevator down to a reception being held in the basement. ?It took a lot of time but it?s still the kind of project that makes a difference.? And as far as St. Gabriel?s is concerned, making a difference in people?s lives defines this parish and its community. As opposed to the usual cliché, people like MacMahon, Rita Maisonneuve and Father Jim MacDonald quickly turn ?where there?s a will, there?s a way? into a vibrant new reality. In 1999, a member of the parish left the church $25,000 with a specific request it be used to finance the construction of a new elevator. The bequest was the beginning of an intensive decadelong fund-raising campaign. Ten years later, after several architectural revi- sions, two bidding sessions and a $50,000 grant from the federal government?s EAF (Enabling Accessibility Fund), the diocese gave its final approval to alter the church wall and build the elevator. During Sunday mass on the last day of February, Father Jim MacDonald blessed the new elevator, those who built it, those who raised the money to pay for it and especially the sick, the lame and the aged who can now use it. As one of those frontline warriors who provide the spark and the drive behind every social and religious community, Maisonneuve played a Editor-in-chief: Beryl Wajsman (editor@thesuburban.com) Associate Editor: Anthony Bonaparte (anthony@thesuburban.com) Sports Editor: Mark Lidbetter (sports@thesuburban.com) Editorial Staff: Joel Ceausu, Dan Delmar, Julia Gerke, Joel Goldenberg, Walter J. While sipping a cup of coffee and eating a piece of cake at a reception held after Father MacDonald?s Sunday mass, Maisonneuve smiled as she looked at the happy crowd. ?Now we can use the church hall for all sorts of events,? she said. ?There was a time when all sorts of events happened at the church. Politicians used the stage around election time; people put on plays, held receptions and listened to concerts. The church was more than just a building, it was a community and that?s what?s happening here at St. Gabriel?s.? ? Editorial Contributors: Maria I.
