CDN/NDG honours outstanding citizens
By Abby E. Schachter The Suburban The CDN and NDG Outstanding Citizens awards were held at Montreal's Mount Royal Chalet last Thursday. Mayor Michael Applebaum said Beaver Lake was chosen as the party location because it represents the beauty of Montreal, "we thought what better place to hold the awards ceremony, than this beautiful and historic place." Applebaum, along with fellow NDG/CDN councilors greeted guests as they made their way into the party. "It's about bringing people together. It's about saying thank-you, it's a gathering of friends," said Applebaum as he shook hands with the nominees. The affair included a red carpet leading up the front steps of the chalet, cocktails, a violinist and an assortment of food. Francois Puchin; the Communications officer for both the CDN and NDG boroughs, explained that the first time event will most likely happen again. "We decided to regroup everything into one big event, instead of having many small ones." The plan, according to Puchin is to have a yearly ceremony in honour of volunteers. "It's important to thank the volunteers; By Joel Goldenberg The Suburban Montreal West's previously cancelled infrastructure work planned for this summer appears to be on again, thanks to a trip to the National Assembly, Mayor Beny Masella announced. A tender call for engineering services for the work had been cancelled because of delays by Quebec in responding whether it will help fund the work. Previously, as reported by The Suburban, Montreal West was forced to change the order of the streets getting repairs because of a difference in priorities between the town and the Programme d'Infrastructure de Québec (PIQ) and newly retired employees, these citizens have made it a positive community." Interestingly, all 27 nominees were voted in by their peers. "These people run community centres and/or spend most of their free time helping others," said Puchin reflectively, "their daily hard work is recognized by their peers." None of the guests or nominees had been told who the winners were, and everyone seemed very excited to find out. "It's a big surprise, no one knows who's going to win," whispered Puchin, as the opening ceremony began. The winners of the Outstanding Citizen awards included: Frederick Back and Sam "Sugar Sammy" Khullar, who were both, tied in first place for the Ambassador and Outreach award. Back is an artist and animation filmmaker. He is also a four-time Oscar nominee and a twotime Oscar winner. Khullar is a well known comedian, who has performed all around the world and is also the recipient of the National Assembly medal. Lennox Charles, an active volunteer in the CDN community for over 25 years, was the winner of the Volunteerism and Community program. The Quebec program wanted the town to first fix the streets with the worst sewers, not the worst potholes. Masella told last week's town council meeting that he and town manager Stéphane Dulude visited Quebec City the previous week. "We went to see Justice Minister [and area MNA] Kathleen Weil and we met, more importantly, with [Municipal Affairs] Minister Laurent Lessard concerning the non-answer we've been getting on our funding requests," he said. "It looks like we've come to some sort of agreement, although we won't get funding under the PIQ (Programme d'Infrastructure de Québec), we will very likely get funding under the Groups award. Bryna Wasserman, the artistic director at the Segal Center for Performing Arts, won for Sports and Culture. Cooperative la Maison Verte took home the Economy and Innovation award. La Maison Verte is the very first environmental solidarity co-op in Canada. The Suburban did a profile on the organization not too long ago. Pierre Ramet, the Coordinator of the Societe d'Histoire de la Côte des Neiges, for the past 25 years, won the Architecture and Heritage award. The Civic-Mindedness and Social Involvement award went to Brian Smith. Smith has been an employee at Carrefour Jeunesse Emploi since 1998. He is the director of the Monnaie-Money program, a youth program that specializes in teaching financial management. The Outstanding Citizens awards demonstrate that the Borough's non-profit groups are recognized and appreciated. Mayor Applebaum stated that a celebratory event was in order," These are the people who are building the borough's reputation and making CDN-NDG a great place to live. We wanted to express our sincere appreciation for them." n

PRECO (pipeline renewal program), in which case we will be able to do some infrastructure work this summer. "We don't know the final numbers yet, we have an idea of which streets [will be affected] because we're going by our order of priorities that was determined in our intervention plan. We will probably be doing work this summer." At the March 22 council meeting, council passed a $10.3 million loan bylaw to carry out street, sidewalk, and sewer repair work, and street lamp, valve and hydrant replacement on Banstead, Radcliffe, Wolseley South, Strathearn, Fenwick, Sheraton, Roxton, Wolseley, Percival, Ainslie and Campbell. n
