RALLY

Cont'd from page 2 rained more than 3,000 bombs on Israeli civilians in 2008, and that despite this, Israel allows humanitarian aid to get through to Gaza. "Our government stands in total solidarity with the people of Gaza who must suffer under the oppressive regime controlled by Hamas terrorists. It is Prime Minister Harper who has taken the principled leadership in the world - he was the first leader in the world to cut off the Hamas regime from aid, to pull Canada out of the Durban hate festival, to instruct his diplomats to walk out of a speech given by [Iran's] Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. And when the leaders of the Francophonie attempted to impose a one-sided resolution against Israel in the aftermath of the war with Hezbollah, Prime Minister Harper was the only leader to stand up and block the passage of that resolution. "Our government was deeply proud to have a visit from [Israeli] Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last week, and we will always welcome Israeli leaders as our friends." Conservative Senator Leo Housakos agreed that Harper "will always stand by a state that believes in democracy, freedom and the rule of law. "In order to have peace, it has to be a twoway street, and right now, you have one side that wants genuine peace and the other wants the destruction of Israel. That will lead to nothing but conflict." Mount Royal Liberal MP Irwin Cotler said that Hamas is a "terrorist entity with a genocidal objective, not because I say so, but because Hamas says so in its charter. And its genocidal objectives are embedded in an anti- social and sports activities for retired persons. It also offers a program of activities throughout the year, and as such stands out from other associations for seniors. Its success is due to the commitment of some 15 volunteers, who together put in about 3,000 hours of work a year." In the Municipal Employee category, sports and recreation department employees Ghislaine Vandal, Louise-Hélène Lefebvre, Marie-Pascale Richard and Urpi Samara Carhuachagua were honoured for a 10-year-old integration program for handicapped children at day camps, as an effort to "combat prejudice against difference. "The team in charge of the program is noted for its professionalism, drive and awareness of the needs of the clientele in question. Furthermore, the team also works to help young children subject to diverse limitations participate in activities offered by the borough." Also on hand for the ceremony was Mayor Alan DeSousa, and councillors Maurice Cohen and Michelle Biron. n Semitic ideology, not because I say so, but because Hamas says so with regard to the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, a centrepiece in that charter and covenant... and it targets Jews because they are Jews. That's what Hamas is all about." Cotler added that he commended Harper and the Canadian government for its initiatives regarding Israel. Rabbi Poupko said participants gathered in support of Israel, democracy and human rights, and "the right of a country to defend itself and make sure its citizens are not threatened or harmed." He also lambasted Turkey, which is now condemning Israel for its operation against the ship from its country, as "hypocritical." Rabbi Poupko also spoke about an audiotape which revealed that when Israel directed one of the Turkish ships to the port of Ashdod for inspection, the response was "go back to Auschwitz!" "Our response is simple - the day when the Jew is weak and defenseless is over! That period was yesterday and it will never return! They may fantasize about a return to Auschwitz, but we dream about a future of peace and brotherhood, the future of a secure Israel!" Rabbi Steinmetz targeted this past Saturday's protesters, asking why they do not rally for those oppressed in China, Turkey, Darfur and Iran. "Why don't the peace activists care? "I am a peace activist. I deeply want to see Palestinians living in peace and prosperity, but I also want to see Israelis being able to live in peace in their homeland, to wake up every morning and not have to worry about suicide bombers, Qassams and Katushya rockets, to live in a country without war and terror, and with peace and security." n
