CSL's Station 9 police looking for bus shelter smashers

By Joel Goldenberg The Suburban Police are looking for one or more people who have been vandalizing bus shelters in Côte St. Luc and Hampstead, Station 9 commander Sylvain Bissonnette told The Suburban recently. In one week, "nine bus shelters were targeted. Their windows were broken, and we're looking into the various facts about that. It was mostly in Hampstead and Côte St. Luc. "We're asking the Volunteer Citizens on Patrol (vCOPS in Côte St. Luc) and

Cont'd from page 6 (being poisoned)." Devine said there are no suspects as of yet and tips from the public in NDG are crucial to stopping the cruelty. Even if the culprit is caught, another challenge would be to convince the court to impose a severe penalty. "We've never successfully prosecuted a case of cruelty with a fauna animal," she explained. "But there's nothing to say that someone couldn't get jail time one day." now the new Hampstead MVP (Municipal Volunteer Patrol), and the citizens at large, to give us a hand and tell us if they see anything and give us this information." Bissonnette said he wants the case solved quickly. "It's mostly in the evening or the early morning," the commander added. "It happened over the period of a week, and nine in a week is a lot. They simply break the front window of the shelter, which is a huge piece of glass. Before, there was a graffiti problem but now they're just breaking windows. That's a big problem." In theory, the person responsible could be penalized with a jail term as long as five years or a fine as large as $10,000. "This is an illegal and inhumane way to deal with fauna issues," Devine said, suggesting NDG residents with skunk problems should "contact us and we'll find a humane way to deal with them, safely and naturally. If a skunk is on someone's property, there's a reason for them being there. It's because there is either food or shelter." For tips on animal control, visit www.spcamontreal.com. n
