MoWest lamp pole question prompts lots of laughs
By Joel Goldenberg The Suburban An exchange at a recent Montreal West council meeting on lamp poles in the town prompted lots of laughs from both the audience and council members. Resident Frank Alessi brought up the issue of a lamp pole belonging to the town in the vicinity of 120 and 124 Easton. "They've had some wiring problems," Alessi said. "The wire is tied with tape and rope and dangling on a pole and then fastened to a tree, and then crossing the street, and it's been like that for some time now." Several audience members guffawed at this point. Alessi wondered whether the question should go to councillor Joe McKenzie, in charge of public works on council; or Dino Mazzone, in charge of public security on council. "Mr. Mazzone's pointing to you, Mr. McKenzie," Alessi said, to more laughs. "Is there any chance we might take that wire now and... er... put it somewhere more appropriate? No pun intended." More laughs ensued, and a "wooo!" emanated from the council area. "When you see a structure like that, it's basically a temp repair..." said McKenzie. "Yes, for two or three years now," said Alessi, to an explosion of laughter. McKenzie said he was not aware of the amount of time the wires had been connected to the lamp post in that way. "There is another one around town I'm aware of, and I believe it's been fixed," the councillor added. "We have a contractor that will come into town on Wednesdays, this will be worked on. We will be on it shortly. Hopefully, when you come back to the June [21] meeting, it will be solved." n
GRAFFITI
Cont'd from page 1 us to absorb all of the costs is over." The borough spends roughly $700,000 to remove graffiti from both public and private property every year. In 2009, the borough removed 19,000 square metres and, with the help of community groups like Prévention NDG, 11 artistic graffiti murals were painted; the reasoning is that if more walls are used as artistic space, less free space will be left for vandals. It would be difficult to predict how much money the city could make back from suing vandals. Station 11 Commander Daniel Leduc could not give an exact figure, but he said roughly 10 percent of perpetrators are caught. He urged borough residents who see vandals spray painting to immediately call 9-1-1. To report damage done to city property, call 3-1-1. "We're declaring a war on graf-

"It's everyone's job." She said not being vigilant with graffiti could lead to a more lax attitude with the population about cleanliness, and a dirtier borough. Vandals who are sued by the city to recoup the costs of cleaning up their mess will still be subject to criminal prosecution. If the offender is a minor, attempts will be made to collect the money from parents. n
