CANADA DAY IN CSL REMINDER

The annual Canada Day celebration takes place from 1 p.m. to 10:40 p.m. at Trudeau Park, and will include a Canadian citizenship ceremony, a Human Rights Walkway ceremony, live music, fireworks and more, the city announced. More specifically, "a Canadian citizenship judge will administer the citizenship oath to new Canadians at 4:30 p.m.," says an announcement. "Immediately following the ceremony, at approximately 5:30 p.m., Côte St. Luc will unveil a plaque for its Human Rights Walkway honouring those who spoke out and fought for Jews oppressed in the former Soviet Union, Syria, and Ethiopia. Other activities include inflatable games, a roaming magician, a children's train, face painting, arts and crafts, fireworks and more. There will also be live performances by musical groups Airport 77, Zuruba and Music Academy Fortissimo throughout the evening."

HAMPSTEAD TRAFFIC CALMING

Hampstead council recently announced traffic calming measures being taken on several streets in the town. They include speed bumps at 54 Aldred, at 18 and 47 Cleve, 250 and 281 Dufferin (a street that already has numerous speed bumps), 60 and 84 Thurlow. Crosswalks were announced for 10 Cleve and 21 Lyncroft, and new stop signs were announced for 30 Granville and 72 Thurlow.

HAMPSTEAD POOL SAFETY

Hampstead is reminding residents, with the onset of summer, of bylaw 760 concerning swimming pools: * It is prohibited to erect, install or alter an exterior swimming pool, hot tub or spa without first obtaining a permit to this effect. * The swimming pool must be situated at least 2 metres (6.6 feet) from any lot line, fence, accessory building or deck and from the main building, as measured from the exterior perimeter of the water surface. * Swimming pools, if they are to be used during the evening and night shall be equipped with permanent lighting to illuminate the entire swimming pool area. Lighting around swimming pools shall not be directed onto neighbours' properties. Lighting shall not operate between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. * Swimming pools shall be equipped with an automatic shut-off device which will activate should the skimmer or other suction pipe detect the presence of a foreign object. * A pool must be completely surrounded by a fence, which may not be less than 1.85 metres (6 feet) high at all points as measured from the adjoining grade. "Residents are invited to call public security at 514- 369-8250 to report unsecured pool gates," says a town advisory.

RECORD SET STRAIGHT

Hampstead councillor Abe Gonshor wanted to set the record straight recently regarding a quote by councillor Harvey Shaffer in a recent issue of The Suburban. Shaffer, who was being interviewed about the damage caused to his house by a lightning strike, happened to mention that Gonshor was the only council member not present at the annual Federation of Canadian Municipalities meeting. Gonshor pointed out at the June council meeting that his wife had been hospitalized at the time for eight weeks.

OMHM tenants seek sustainable city through contest

Office municipal d'habitation de Montréal holds 15th edition of Green Thumbs contest

By Kevin Woodhouse The Suburban The Office municipal d'habitation de Montréal (OMHM) is hoping to brighten up the city of Montreal one window box at a time. In an effort to make a more sustainable and healthier city, the OMHM is launching its 15th edition of the Green Thumb contest whereby residents are invited to grow flower beds and vegetable gardens by decorating their balconies or properties. "It is a contest for residents to promote their own garden initiatives and by decorating their front lawns and gardens to make the whole city look greener," said David Pontbriand of OMHM. Over $15,000 in prizes is awarded to winners in individual and community categories when winners are announced in late September at the Montreal Botanical Gardens. To register for the contest, call 514-872-2016. The first contest, held in the summer of 1996, had just over 100 participants whereas more than 500 public housing residents are expected to make a difference botanically. "Plants improve general well-being through their beauty, but also through their power to reduce greenhouse gases and urban heat islands," said contest spokesperson Albert Mondor. "Horticulture is also good physical activity. Gentle and effective, it is easy to practice, develops concentration and promotes social interaction."

CENTRE

Cont'd from page 1 As a result of his meeting with Barsalou, Brigitte Brabant, Francois Quintal and urban studies professor Alexandre Lambert, Mayor Applebaum agreed to abandon the borough's plan to close and sell both the building and its pool after which he agreed to maintain the building's present activities and all of its assorted community services. Accompanied by borough director Stéphane Plante, Applebaum also promised to preserve the Botrel Street cultural centre where he will maintain the building's exhibition room, its small theatre and Publisher: Michael Sochaczevski Associate Publisher: Sari Medicoff VP Business Development & Marketing: David Solomon Sales Manager: David Broadman Production Manager: Karen L. While the borough's master plan will be revised to reflect Applebaum's concessions, the mayor also informed Barsalou and the others how the plan's scheduled ratification will be pushed back to next September if not later. "That's just to make sure everybody knows about what Applebaum promised us when he met with our committee," she said. "The citizen's movement has been really effective," wrote Barsalou.
