Looking into the crystal ball, will 17year-old Benjamin Masella eventually become a pharmacist/politician like his dad or play professional hockey? Speaking to me last week on the day of his graduation from Lower Canada College (LCC), the young man in question confided that when he thinks about a career he favours the option of sports psychology. That being said, do not rule out a National Hockey League career for him. Masella, whose dad is the mayor of Montreal West, was recently drafted by the Montreal Juniors of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). The six foot, 200 pound defenceman is coming off a strong season as the captain of the Midget AAA and West Island based Lac St. Louis Lions. Despite the temptation of the elite QMJHL, Masella has opted for a chance to attend and play hockey at Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts - a U.S. prep school which has produced a number of NHL draft picks. "My son was ranked in the third round for the 2009 QMJHL draft, but we were 100 percent honest with the 16 teams DÉCARIE SQUARE 6900, DÉCARIE BLVD., CÔTE SAINT-LUC, PQ. %* that contacted him then when we said we were not sure he would be going to the Q," Mayor Beny Masella told me. "Since they would have had to draft him in the very early rounds as 16-year-olds have to be drafted in the first five rounds, they were not ready to lose a high draft pick. This year, as a 17-year-old, they could draft him in the later rounds. Again, we were 100 percent honest with the teams and told them he's off to Deerfield in September. Montreal drafted him to reserve his rights in case he returns to Canada after prep rather than going on to NCAA university hockey." Benjamin says he is not closing the door to in fact play for Montreal after his two years of prep school are up. "Right now I am not putting all of my eggs in one basket," he said. "The Juniors drafting me certainly opened another door. They are the only team I probably would have considered playing for anyhow. Right now I am excited about going to Deerfield. It will be a good experience." Junior Jottings: Westmounter Farrel Miller, the enterprising owner of the Montreal Juniors, continues to think outside of the box. He has scheduled three regular season games next season for 10:30 a.m. weekday starts and has sold out each match to different school boards and associations...Miller rolled the dice a few weeks ago and traded for
