Cont'd from page 1 directors president Bernard Stotland. Bolduc told Friday's press conference that the pavilion, located on Legaré behind the hospital's E and H pavilions, will "house the emergency department, operating rooms, day hospital, intensive care unit, coronary care unit, cardiac care unit, birthing centre and neonatal intensive care unit." The first phase, the 20,349 square-metre emergency room, will be built through $93.9 million in funding from Quebec, while the Jewish General Hospital Foundation will provide $25.9 million for an underground parking area, funded through parking fees. A proud Bergman told The Suburban that while the new emergency department will have the same 53 beds as the current facility. "It will be in a much larger emergency room space, with dignity to the patients in private rooms. If they want to go over 53 beds, they will be able to do so. Right now, some of the beds are in corridors and it's not so simple to treat the patients in that way." The new facility is also supposed to address the issue of waiting times and patient flow. "I'm very, very happy," Bergman added. "It's really for the people, and this hospital is attended by people of all languages, religions and colours, and they come here well-treated. The quality of medical care is just excellent, and the greater proportion of my constituents are treated here." Area MNA Pierre Arcand, on a mission to the U.S. last Friday, sent a statement that "the current emergency department is bursting at the seams, with about 70,000 admissions a year. The new emergency department will be much more spacious. In addition to ensuring modern and functional facilities for healthcare professionals, it will promote accessible, high quality and safe care for the benefit of the local population." Stotland hailed the "groundbreaking" occasion, while Stern said the project will "bring our physical infrastructure into the 21st century." Asked about the schedule for building the new emergency department, Stern said that "we're going to start as quickly as possible with the confidence of the government that they have put in us, working with our professionals and with our community advisors. "We are going to do everything we can - because the situation is about the crowding of emergencies throughout the city - to move this as quickly as possible. Our intent is to try and get the hole in the ground before the Montreal winter arrives. This will allow us to proceed as quickly as we can to build the facilities that are going to begin to solve and improve some of the situations regarding the pressures in emergency. So we're going to work nights and weekend, throughout the summer." He estimated that the first patients would be admitted two years after the groundbreaking. n

Great weather for Hampstead Day

After several days of unstable weather - alternating between sunshine and heavy rain - the sun stayed out and the warmth remained for the annual Hampstead Day, held Monday at Hampstead Park. There were numerous activities, including inflatable games; the new Municipal Volunteer Patrol (MVP) had one of several booths and the Montreal Jazzkidz Orchestra (left) and the Fundamentals performed. The facility will be located on Légaré Street, immediately behind the hospital's existing E and H pavilions, and across the street from the main hospital parking lot.
