our mission!'
tough their vehicles are, Afghanistan is the acid test. Bourdeau said just driving around the back roads of Afghanistan was enough to create weeks of work for his crew. "The environment was brutal," he said. "The dust got into everything and before long, we were changing motors and transmissions just as easily as some people change a tire...and we were always changing plenty of tires because they were being ripped to shreds on the Afghan roads." Once Canadian soldiers began to be killed when the Taliban's new I.E.D. (Improvised Explosive Device) turned into a serious threat against the army's lightly armored transport vehicles, the army quickly lost faith in its standard Ilitis jeeps (made by Bombardier) and placed its order for the first of its 1,159 Mercedes G-wagons. Bourdeau said problems began immediately after the first of the vehicles were delivered to Canadian forces in Afghanistan from Germany. "Once they left the airport, we began to have problems after only a few kilometres," he said. "Mechanics were flown in from Germany to check out the rolling stock and in the end; every bolt on every one of the new jeeps had to be checked and secured." Heat and dust began to take its toll on both the machines and Bourdeau's crew even as the enemy began to learn how to deal with the new armor-plated vehicles. While Boudreau's crew never came under fire, he made sure his men maintained both their weapons against the Afghan dust and themselves against the Afghan heat. "I made sure everybody drank lot of water," he said. "I saw too many people go down because they were dehydrated."

When asked what he thought about his time in Afghanistan, Boudreau said he has fond memories of his time there. "I have a lot of good memories," he said. "It was a good experience and very interesting to see that part of the world. None of my crew got hurt and we accomplished our mission." If ordered to do so, Boudreau said he would have no problem going back to Afghanistan. n
