"You can't help it. It's the training." At 16, Vescio, now a Master-Corporal with the Royal Montreal Regiment, began working toward entering reserves, a dream he had since childhood. Not your typical career path for a young Italian kid from St. Leo, but one that his parents supported, and the Reserves were a perfect choice for Vescio, who spends his civilian time working for both his father's construction firm and for public security for the city of Montreal West. "My parents are always 110 percent supportive of everything I do," he says. "No matter what." Basic training was not what he had anticipated, raised like many Canadians on the movie version of the military. "There is a lot more respect for the soldier," he says, adding that the Reserves training system is top notch. "Whether it's a new weapon, or a new way to move a truck," he says, "you are constantly learning. You are constantly pushed to your limits, so that the system can remove the weakest links, the ones targeted by your enemies." With five years of experience, Vescio continues to receive refresher training and maintain bonds with his infantry regiment. He did not make it to Afghanistan, "but I have 18 friends who - thank God - came back safe and sound," he says. He was deployed domestically instead on a mission to support RCMP operations in Vancouver during last winter's Olympics. His girlfriend and
