Verdun implements new green zones

By P.A. Sévigny The Suburban As a veteran politician with a lifetime of experience in municipal politics, Verdun Borough Mayor Claude Trudel is no longer concerned about climate change as much as he's concerned about what his borough is going to do about it. Both Trudel and Henri-Francois Gautrin, the district's Liberal MNA, announced a three-year pilot project which they believe will help cool down the borough's "lots de chaleur" - its so-called "urban hot spots." "Urban hot-spots occur whenever we can determine where there's a big difference between the temperatures in specific inner city locations as compared to the temperature in the suburbs," said Gautrin. "Insofar as we know there can be as much as a 10 degree difference between the suburbs and the city, that kind of heat can bring on a variety of serious health issues, especially for seniors and otherwise vulnerable people." As the summer temperature continues to rise, city "hot spots" are created by a lack of green space, short sighted zoning policies, black asphalt and obsolescent building codes. When combined, all of these conditions give rise to a situation where the streets begin to absorb the summer's heat with serious consequences for semi-autonomous senior citizens or for people with anterior health problems. Insofar as nothing can be done about construction such as it already exists among the borough's so-called hot-spots, Pascal Bigras, the director of Nature-Action Quebec, said

St. Laurent's Station 7 police conducts awareness campaign

By Joel Goldenberg The Suburban Station 7 police in St. Laurent are conducting an awareness campaign among merchants near the Côte Vertu Metro station, according to their bi-monthly report on crime and accidents in the borough. The report, which was released at this month's council meeting, did not include any actual crime statistics for March and April, as the police have switched to a new information the city can improve the situation by creating a new urban environment which could easily turn down the urban heat zones. Over the next three years, both the borough and the province plan to spend a combined total of $1,290,000 in selected parts of the borough. Several residents in the Wellington-De L'Église district will be happy to learn how the decrepit lot located on the now desolate intersection of Verdun and De L'Église will soon be turned into a 450 square metre green zone equipped with assorted sprinklers, plants, a rainfall retention system and a living garden wall. Other measures include the planting and subsequent care of over 900 mature trees (anywhere from 10 to 15 years old) which will be planted on both private and public property in selected parts of the borough. With the help and appreciation of local residents and assorted neighborhood committees, the mayor also announced how the new program will transform the borough's infamous Rushbrooke alley along with at least four others into collective green zones for the adjacent neighborhood. While the province is subsidizing 13 similar projects in different parts of the province, both Gautrin and Bigras said they were all part of a massive pilot project meant to help educate other cities on how to deal with climate change. "This project," said Bigras, "is meant to be a working model for every city and town in the province ....just as much as it's a working model for municipalities who want to improve the quality of life for their citizens." n system. The report points out, as also previously reported in The Suburban, that there was an increase in crime in the vicinity of the Côte Vertu Metro station at the beginning of spring last year. Previous reports pointed out that "providers of public transit" were the victims of criminals in the area, and that one taxi driver from St. Laurent had been found murdered in another municipality."
