Gold medallist Bilodeau make Grand Prix pit stop

Mike Cohen

The LG Crescent Grand Prix Festival was indeed a major highlight of the Formula One weekend. At Thursday's kickoff I had the chance to chat with freestyle skier Alexandre Bilodeau, who won Canada's first gold medal ever on Canadian soil at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games in men's moguls. Bilodeau and some other Olympians took part in the Ford Pit Stop Challenge. Working with the likes of female skiing darling Jennifer Heil (whose dentists are Warren and Jason Retter on Queen Mary Road), his crew changed a tire in 12.8 seconds. Bilodeau, who turns 23 in September, told me attending the festivities was a nice break from his grueling practice schedule. Raised in Rosemere, he now resides in a downtown Montreal condo. He nonetheless visits with his parents and brother Frédéric, born with cerebral palsy, frequently. Who can forget the emotional embrace between Alex and Frédéric, his true inspiration, after he won the gold? I first met Bilodeau just over a year ago at the Cummings Jewish Centre for Seniors Sports Celebrity Breakfast. He was not very well known at all at the time, but charmed everyone with his politeness and good sense of humour. Despite his rocket shot to mega fame, he has not lost that down to earth personality. I asked whether he was being stopped on the street a lot. "Oddly enough not a lot here in Montreal," he said. "It happens more in other cities." While we enjoy some nice weather, Bilodeau expects to spend most of the summer elsewhere. "I need to be in the snow to train," he said. "I will be going to places like Whistler and Argentina to stay in shape." RETURN OF 940: Just a few days before Grand Prix action began I received a phone call from Paul Tietolman, a radio industry veteran who has teased me for the better part of a decade that he would get back into the broadcast business. I accepted his invitation to a press conference June 8 at which time he and partner Nicolas Tétrault, a former Montreal city councillor and native of Pierrefonds, announced the formation of a new entity called Tietolman Tétrault Media (T&T Media) and a bid to purchase the 11 Corus Entertainment Quebec radio stations and revive Info 690 and 940 AM - shut down by Corus in March. You can read much more about this at www.mikecohen.ca (go to Mike's blog). If all else fails and T&T only get to revive Info 690 and 940 AM I believe it will be the start of something significant. Weekend also included the Grand Prix of Broadway music at the Oscar Peterson Concert Hall as the Lyric Theatre Singers performed four outstanding shows to mark their 20th anniversary. Steppin' Out, A Tribute to Broadway and Irving Berlin showed once again what a brilliant musical director Bob Bachelor is. The sold-out audiences indeed recognized this judging by the repeated and well deserved standing ovations he received. Bachelor even stepped on the stage during a Do I Hear a Waltz? scene and danced a few rounds with one of the lady singers. Highlighting the weekend was the dramatic reunion of the Lyric alumni doing a West Side story medley Saturday. COHEN CHATTER: The latest Bureau of Broadcast Measurement (BBM) Personal People Metre (PPM) ratings show CJAD still in the overall anglo market lead followed by Virgin Radio, Q 92.5 FM, CBC Radio One, CHOM and THE TEAM 990, CBC Radio Two and CJPX Radio Classique.. The West End sports community is mourning the sudden passing of 57-year-old Leon Blumer. Leon spent decades as a coach, umpire and organizer on the NDG and Côte St. Luc sports scene.
