Those who make a difference - Marcel Adams
Marcel Adams is the founder of Iberville Developments, a Montrealbased real estate company which was one of the first shopping mall developers in Canada, and the head of the Adams Family Foundation. Born in Romania in 1920, he was a Zionist activist compelled to do forced labour during World War II. He fled to Israel during the war, passing through the Atlit detention camp before settling down to become a "Halutz," a pioneer, in Pardes Channah. He fought in the 1948 War of Independence before moving to Quebec City, where he began investing in real estate after first working as a tanner, his father's profession. This spring, Marcel Adams' visit to Jerusalem created great media buzz in Israel. Marcel Adams - who turns 90 this Aug. 2 - was celebrating his birthday a few months early by giving scholarships away to top science students. Leading Israeli dailies, including Ma'ariv, The Jerusalem Post, and YNet, told how a penniless Romanian Holocaust refugee who fought in the 1948 Israeli War of Independence before becoming one of Canada's top real estate developers, welcomed the sixth class of Adams Fellows at the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Jerusalem. The prestigious fellowship selects promising Israeli scientists early in their graduate school careers, to fund their doctoral studies. In addition to the 12 new recipients this year, 47 other promising young scientists have received the Fellowship since the program began in 2005. The Adams Fellows form a small science community of their own through initiatives such as lectures by renowned scientists and periodic conferences. Previous guest lecturers at Adams Seminars have been Prof. Yisrael Aumann, the Nobel Laureate in Economics; and Prof. Ada Yonath, the recent Nobel Laureate in Chemistry. This year, Marcel's son, Dr. Julian Adams, who lives in Boston, delivered the annual Adams Seminar on the successful, groundbreaking research, dis- Publisher: Michael Sochaczevski Associate Publisher: Sari Medicoff VP Business Development & Marketing: David Solomon Sales Manager: David Broadman Production Manager: Karen L. In establishing the Adams Fellowship Program, Mr. Adams wished "to identify Israel's scientific wunderkinds of tomorrow and to make sure they are comfortable enough to focus on their research, without worrying about money." He seeks to create a cadre of top scholars in the natural sciences, computer science, mathematics and engineering, committed to advancing scientific knowledge and research. Academy President Professor Menahem Yaari describes the agreement establishing the Adams Fellows as one of the most important documents ever for the future of higher education in Israel. The fund of up to $1 million U.S. annually is one of the largest individual investments ever made in Israeli science students. In addition to tuition and living expenses, the fellowship provides regular travel grants for the fellows to present at scholarly conferences or engage in research at top laboratories throughout the world. Candidates come from all seven of Israel's research universities. Sévigny, Samantha St. Jules, Kevin Woodhouse Since its inception in the spring of 2005, the Adams Fellowship program has become the leading fellowship program for Israeli doctoral students. Some of the fellows who have already received their PhDs are in top post-doctoral programs at Berkeley, Stanford, Princeton and MIT. Some have presented papers in Canada and collaborated with Canadian scientists. One graduate, Dr. Amir Shlomai, a resident in internal medicine, made a major discovery that the Hepatitis B Virus behaves as a metabolic gene. His linkage between the virus and host metabolism was covered in the prestigious journal Science under "Editor's Choice." During his recent trip to Israel, Adams spent a day visiting Atlit, where he first found refuge from World War II, and Pardes Channah, at the time a small farming village of 1,500 which today has about 30,000 inhabitants. In the Pardes Channah archives, they found documents from his time there, including a letter acknowledging he would earn four Israeli lira a month from the army through 1949, and a receipt from the municipality acknowledging his request to lower taxes.
