CSL meeting divided over Fleet left turns
By Joel Goldenberg The Suburban Côte St. Luc plans to ease its left turn prohibitions on westbound Fleet Road in August or September, around the same time as its reduction of speed limits on side streets from 50 to 40 km/hr, says councillor Dida Berku. The city will be allowing left turns from Fleet onto Pinedale, Alpine and Randall, except during peak hours - 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays. Currently, left turns are only allowed from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. weekdays and all weekend. Berku, who held a special meeting for residents of her district last Thursday, also said there are plans around the same time for a nearly perpetual green light at Baily and Robinson onto southbound Cavendish, to prevent motorists from using nearby Glencrest as a means to access Côte St. Luc Road. But the left-turn issue dominated what became an animated meeting. At one point, a resident who continu- Publisher: Michael Sochaczevski Associate Publisher: Sari Medicoff VP Business Development & Marketing: David Solomon Sales Manager: David Broadman Production Manager: Karen L. Kay Road resident Howard Silbiger, who has been lobbying council for an easing of the left-turn restrictions for nearly 20 years, was cited by Berku as a reason to change the rules. "Someone like him needs to go to Kay [from Fleet], and why should he have to [go north] on Alpine, go around to Pinedale or Randall [heading south], it's a lot of redundant looping around in our district," Berku said. "If [Silbiger] needs to go home between 10 and 3, or after 7 p.m., why should he have to loop around? There's a lot more exhaust and traffic. [There are many] cars going [north] on Alpine, just passing through, for no reason other than they have to loop around. That's why we brought [traffic calming devices] on Alpine, because it has become unbearable." But some Randall Avenue residents Editor-in-chief: Beryl Wajsman (editor@thesuburban.com) Associate Editor: Anthony Bonaparte (anthony@thesuburban.com) Sports Editor: Mark Lidbetter (sports@thesuburban.com) Editorial Staff: Joel Ceausu, Dan Delmar, Julia Gerke, Joel Goldenberg, Walter J. Lyng, P.A. Sévigny, Samantha St. Jules, Kevin Woodhouse are opposed to the change. One resident said motorists already speed on Randall to beat the countdown traffic light at the corner of Fleet. "Now, if you have left turns, we're going to have more traffic," the resident said. "Already people turn left when they're not supposed to." Berku responded that the speed limit will become 40 km/hr on Randall. "Police are there and they will give tickets," the councillor said. "We'll take note of the objections and bring them back to council. Maybe we could put more poles on your street, but we're committed to trying it." This did not satisfy an especially vocal Randall resident. "There's no way, I have grandchildren, there are children on the street!" he said. "If this happens, I am going to take an injunction against this!" "This is between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., and after 7 p.m.," Berku said of the new left-turn rule. "Try it and we'll see how it works." n Editorial Contributors: Maria I.
