Hampstead mayor responds to criticism of Ethics Code

By Joel Goldenberg The Suburban The back and forth between Hampstead mayor William Steinberg and councillor Abe Gonshor over the town's new Code of Ethics continued last week. Steinberg opened last week's meeting with a prepared statement in response to Gonshor's Suburban letter of the week before. The mayor characterized the letter as containing "false and misleading statements, as well as over the top rhetoric." In recent weeks, both Steinberg and most of Hampstead council; and Gonshor have issued letters to The Suburban and residents explaining their side of the issue. Gonshor has been banned from council's behind closed door caucus meetings, because the councillor refuses to sign the town's recently introduced Code of Ethics, which features rules about conflicts of interest, confidentiality and other matters.
