After 63 years in business, the ?Vente de Fermeture? posters have far more to say about the future of Verdun?s anglophone community than it does about the end of Pat Mullin?s successful little business near the corner of Woodland and Verdun Avenue. ? Page 2

No-left turn signs galore on Fleet/Van Horne
By Joel Goldenberg The Suburban Eastbound Fleet Road in Hampstead and its Montreal counterpart Van Horne Avenue are now filled with no-left turn prohibitions during the morning rush hour, causing a mass of traffic at the already busy corner of Van Horne and Decarie and increased traffic on usually quiet Hampstead streets. Hampstead was prompted to institute its own rush hour left turn restrictions on Fleet because of increased traffic on Netherwood Crescent, which leads to an alternate route to Decarie Blvd. The town?s first attempt at prohibitions angered Côte St. Luc and later led to compromises that satisfied both municipalities. Now, says Hampstead councillor Harvey Shaffer, Hampstead?s calmer streets are once again afflicted by traffic during the morning rush hour, but this time as a result of new traffic prohibitions in Montreal. According to Côte des Neiges-NDG?s rules, cars travelling eastbound on Van Horne, including from Fleet Road in Côte St. Luc and Hampstead, cannot turn left on Clanranald and Coolbrook between 7 and 9 a.m. Monday to Friday. Shaffer, in charge of the traffic portfolio on Hampstead council, told the December See TRAFFIC, page 7

ROB TAUSSIG / THE SUBURBAN Apart from his eyes, Chris Reid?s face is marked by every one of the more than 20 years spent on the mean streets of Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal. ?It?s awful out there,? said Reid. ?It?s worse than anything you could think of.? But once in a while, a man can stumble on a bit of luck and that?s exactly what happened to Chris. After losing her brother to the streets for more than two decades, Joanna S. (not her real name) finally managed to find him with the help of a social worker at the St. James United Church drop-in centre in Montreal?s downtown core. She still remembers the moment when she first saw him in the church. ?I never realized my brother had such beautiful blue eyes,? she said. ?He?s still the boy I used to play with when we were children.? Sitting by the window with a cup of coffee in a fast-food restaurant on the corner of St. Alexandre and Ste. Catherine Street, Joanna held her brother?s hands as she kept telling him how much she loved him. When asked why he waited for so many years before he decided to reach out to his family, Chris said people should understand how many of the city?s street people are too ashamed of their See JOANNA, page 3 (JT923M AA). **No payments required for 120 days when you purchase a new Toyota for up to 72 months through Toyota?s financial services. ?Get $1000 rebate with a lease or purchase.
