Hydro survey bears fruit in St. Laurent
By Joel Goldenberg The Suburban The borough of St. Laurent unveiled a new Internet café in its Centre des Loisirs, bought as a result of funding received from Hydro-Québec after 2,336 residents participated in the utility?s Energy Wise Home Diagnostic campaign, which ran from Oct. 10, 2008 to April 9, 2009. For each questionnaire filled out, the municipality received $35 if it was completed online, or $30 if it was completed on paper and mailed or faxed. In the final tally, St. Laurent received a cheque for $74,265. Numerous other municipalities, such as Côte St. Luc, Hampstead, Montreal West, Town of Mount Royal and others, also participated in the Hydro campaign. The Internet café?s grand opening took place last Wednesday at the recreation centre, at Grenet and Thimens, and attracted St. Laurent mayor Alan DeSousa, St. Laurent-Cartierville MP Stéphane Dion, a representative of St. Laurent MNA Jacques Dupuis and a representative from Hydro- Québec. The café is being hailed as a place for a healthy snack and an opportunity not only to surf the Net, but to also help youth in financially unstable situations obtain their first jobs through Ressources Jeunesse de St. Laurent. ?All those who took part in the Hydro campaign can be proud as it is partly thanks to them that this Internet café was created,? said DeSousa. ?This initiative not only makes it possible to democratize access to information technology, but also to sensitize the population to the importance of helping young people in difficulty.? DeSousa added that the project falls under the category of sustainable development. ?It is often thought that sustainable development applies only to projects related to the environment, but this concept also touches on the social aspect. Facilitating the integration of these young people on the job market and of making them active citizens, enables us to ensure the development of our community in a responsible and equitable way.?

Félix said. ?But we now know that when we believe in an idea and we have a social network which provides the necessary support, anything is possible.? CSL BUDGET
Cont?d from page 6 Medical Services department and building maintenance, $7.8 million for public works, $4.6 million for environmental services (infrastructure, recycling, etc.), $3.6 million for recreation and culture and $2.6 million for the Eleanor London Library. During a question period, council regular Bernard Tonchin asked council ? in light of the tax increase and the economic situation ? if residents could pay their tax bills in more than two installments to lessen the burden. ?There are many seniors who cannot afford the increase of any taxes, and we have young people who you encourage to come to Côte St. Luc who sometimes find it difficult to pay the taxes.? Housefather replied that Côte St. Luc has to pay Montreal in two installments, or it will have to pay 15 percent more in interest. ?We?re not in a position to be able to [accept payment in more than two installments] as long as Montreal requires us to pay the two payments on time,? the mayor said. ?
