EXTRA LEAN GROUND BEEF
relating to Hampstead?s call for a change in the 51 bus route, says councillor Harvey Shaffer, in charge of the legal affairs portfolio on council. ?The transport commission contends that they have legal grounds to maintain their right to continue? the current route, the councillor said at the January council meeting. Late last year, Mayor William Steinberg said that if the change did not take place by Jan. 11, the town would make its own changes in the area. The change proposed would see the westbound 51 turn left from Queen Mary Road onto Stratford, right at Côte St. Luc Road and left at Fielding, thus bypassing the congested Ellerdale-Côte St. Luc Road intersection. Going the other way, the bus would turn right from Fielding onto eastbound Côte St. Luc Road, left at Stratford and right onto Queen Mary. A council resolution said the 51 bus is often seen going over the 35 km/hr speed limit specifically for buses, and is considered ?a danger to residents and children By Joel Goldenberg The Suburban Ever since the mergers took place in 2002 and even after demergers took effect in 2006, suburban municipalities have complained of a lack of cooperation between municipalities and the fire department, whose control was transferred from suburbs to Montreal as a whole. Côte St. Luc councillors, including Glenn Nashen and Dida Berku, have brought up the issue many times over the years, especially when it came to conducting fire inspections to help prevent fires. Berku said in 2006 that inspections are a fraction of what they should be, and mayor Anthony Housefather concurred. The issue came up again at the living in the area, especially in light of the fact the road is curved and visibility is limited.? Steinberg added at the time that after Jan. 11, ?the town reserves the right to remove the no-stopping zone on Queen Mary eastbound just east of the Queen Mary Road and Ellerdale intersection, and permit parking in the area; and remove the exclusion which allows buses to turn left at the Queen Mary and Ellerdale Road intersection as of Jan. 11.? Reached at the time, STM board vicepresident Marvin Rotrand responded that the STM ?doesn?t react well to threats from Hampstead, or anyone else.? At this month?s council meeting, Shaffer explained that the STM contends that the change to the route ?inconveniences thousands of passengers, puts an extra four to five minutes on the route and it?s less safe ? buses are large and very difficult to turn at Stratford whereas it?s easier at Ellerdale. The town has a different view, and we?ll see what a court will decide through a declaratory judgment.? ?
CSL concerned about fire department cooperation
December Côte St. Luc council meeting. Nashen, in charge of the public safety portfolio on council, said that the fire department had not submitted their report for November. At every monthly meeting, Côte St. Luc adopts monthly reports from various city departments, as well as the Montreal-controlled police and fire departments. ?Even when they do submit their report, it?s virtually impossible to tell what it is they are doing in terms of Côte St. Luc,? Nashen said. ?We?ve asked, for four years now, for a qualitative report that gives an indication as to their operations and in terms of the prevention work that?s being done here. ?We have yet to receive any type of sig- See FIRE DEPARTMENT, page 10
