NEWS & ANALYSIS
CTV?s Hamamdjian recounts her Haiti experience
Talk about baptism under fire. Only a few months into her assignment as a reporter for the CTV National News, Daniele Hamamdjian never dreamed she?d be dispatched to an area of devastation like Haiti and be asked to do her job under such trying circumstances. When Hamamdjian left the CTV Montreal team for a promotion in Ottawa, only four years after assuming full-time reporting duties, she was excited about the challenge. Immediately after the earthquake hit Haiti she was actually sent back to Montreal to file some national stories on local reaction among the Quebec Haitian community when her assignment editor called. ?We are sending you to Haiti,? she was told. In a matter of hours she was at the Canadian Forces Base in Trenton, Ontario ready to fly into the torn apart nation. Hamamdjian spent a week in Haiti, gaining an extremely high profile across the country with extraordinary live reports from the airport and amid the rubble. One of the questions I had for and others on the ground there is how did they eat, sleep and bathe in a coun- try with little in the way of electricity? ?We actually slept on the floor of the Canadian embassy for the first few nights until we managed to get a hotel,? Daniele told me. ?That is where most of the journalists were. I was fortunate to have brought a sleeping bag with me. There were a lot of us and we had to share one bathroom. There were no showers. I bought what is known as camp shampoo, which does not require water for rinsing. I really take my hat off to our embassy.? CTV Montreal news director Jed Kahane is naturally proud of his former staffer. ?It?s a pretty big leap to go from the relatively quiet streets of Montreal to the ruins of Port au Prince?, he said. ?Daniele has a very level head and takes her work seriously. I was very impressed at how she managed to get the job done under such intense pressure, and help Canadians not only to understand, but also to feel the magnitude of Haiti?s loss.? Mike Drolet of Global TV?s national newscast and a former reporter with the local station here also spent a week in Haiti. He actually slept outdoors on the grounds of the embassy before finding a functioning hotel in the middle of the city. ?I wrapped myself in a jacket the first two nights before finding a blanket and I used cardboard as a mattress,?
