Cavendish link bureau funds not wasted: Housefather
By Joel Goldenberg The Suburban The $5 million allocated by Montreal for a bureau to oversee the still-awaited Cavendish link between St. Laurent and Côte St. Luc has not gone to waste, says Côte St. Luc mayor Anthony Housefather. The bureau was set up during the merger years, but Montreal?s enthusiasm for the link seemed to wane after several municipalities demerged from Montreal. Côte St. Luc has been lobbying ever since to get the project prioritized. However, there has been no movement on the project in recent years. Council regular Irving Itman asked last week?s monthly council meeting where the $5 million went, or its balance. ?It might be minuscule compared to the entire Montreal budget, but I believe there are other such projects that went by the wayside and a lot of money was spent irresponsibly,? he said. ?I would like to have an accounting of those moneys.? Housefather replied that the Cavendish project bureau did function for more than two years. ?According to the previous member of the executive committee in charge of transport, who lost in the last election, the vast majority of the expense ? we never received a full and proper account-

ing despite us asking for it ? but the money that was used did not go to waste because it designed the options for a Cavendish extension, including an option fully supported by Côte St. Luc. Côte St. Luc, TMR and other reconstituted cities on the island will continue to lead the charge to push for the extension of Cavendish to come to fruition ? we?ve made representation to [D?Arcy McGee?s] Lawrence Bergman and other MNAs of the importance of Quebec funding this.? ? Côte St. Luc, cooperation between the police and Côte St. Luc is exemplary and Station 9 commander Sylvain Bissonnette even regularly attends the council meetings of Côte St. Luc, Hampstead and Montreal West. Contact was made with the Montreal fire department, but The Suburban received no comment as of press time. ?
