While there was a lot of political star power in the room, Governor General Michaëlle Jean stole the show with her frank and sincere appeal for all of Canada?s generosity and support for the victims of the Haitian catastrophe. Côte des Neiges resident Simon Baudin is one of the lucky Haitian Montrealers. He left Haiti for Canada 35 years ago and most of his family is here. But for a time, he and his family were uncertain of the fate of his sister, who lives in Port au Prince, which pretty much all collapsed in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. It was only four or five days later that he heard any word. ?Suddenly, she gave us a call that she?s okay,? a relieved Baudin told The Suburban. ?But her house collapsed. Thank God, she wasn?t home when it happened. Everybody was out of the house. We were thinking the worst when we didn?t have any contact.? He explained that communications were down until a satellite setup was established to enable contact to and from outside the country.
