Laraque becomes eloquent spokesman for Haiti cause

When the Montreal Canadiens signed enforcer Georges Laraque to a three year, $4.5 million contract fans licked their chops of the prospect of the NHL heavyweight champion flexing his muscles against any goon who looked the wrong way at a member of Le Bleu, Blanc Rouge. SUNDAY: 10:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M. Regrettably, Laraque?s first year with the Habs was hardly worth celebrating. He spent most of the season nursing a sore back and while he did get into a few noteworthy slugfests, media types were openly questioning general manager Bob Gainey for handing out such a generous contract. Laraque?s back has been acting up most of this season as well. When he does get in the lineup, it is with limited ice time. His fights are few and far between, mostly because others do not want to take him on. Last week he Catalogue shopping 24 hours a day, 7 days a week 1-800-267-3277 www.sears.ca scored his first goal as a Canadien and it could not have come at a better time. Reeling from the devastation from his parents? native land of Haiti, he put a key goal into the Dallas Stars net and sparked a 5-3 Montreal victory. While Laraque is hardly one of this city?s top sports stars, he is quickly gaining notice as a fabulous team ambassador. Born here in Montreal, his parents came here from Haiti in their 20s. Most of their family remains in the now devastated country. While Laraque himself has only been there twice as a youth, he told CJAD?s Andrew Carter Monday that he feels an urge to get on a plane now to Haiti and personally lend a helping hand. Before the earthquake hit he was already involved in a campaign to build a school in Port au Prince. Laraque has become an eloquent spokesman for the local Haitian community, in both English and French. He is actually quite articulate and chooses his words well. I had the opportunity to meet him personally last summer through a friend and he was indeed a gentle giant. Since arriving here he has perhaps become the one member of the Habs willing to make a public appearance for a good cause. As Montreal?s 100,000-strong Haitian community tries to find ways to help their friends and family back home, they are lucky to have a professional athlete of Laraque?s stature. The Canadiens too should take a good hard look at what type of positive

Daskos is a well known Montreal businessman and member of the advisory council of Suburban editor?s Beryl Wajsman?s Institute for Public Affairs of Montreal. Working with the institute network Daskos has facilitated the expedition of thousands of badly needed tents, cots, bedding and other shelter equipment to Haiti. He has arranged for their transport from various points in the United States into the beleagured nation through the Dominican Republic. It is expected that at the end of this project over 8,000 tent shelters will have been delivered to Porte au Prince. While quantities last. Personal shopping only. Memo to Gainey and head coach Jacques Martin: Let Georges play and do not buy out his contract at the end of the year, as rumours suggest. When his hockey career does end, Laraque is already proving that he has a future in community affairs or politics. I?d sign him up to my party any day of the week! COHEN CHATTER: When Daniele Hamamdjian left the local CTV News team recently to join the prestigious Ottawa bureau it looked like she would be getting her feet wet covering the federal political scene. The sudden crisis in Haiti has made Daniele a true national TV star as she reports from the trenches of the devastated nation...
