Sklar Returns: It has been five years since Elliot Montgomery Sklar left Montreal to study in Miami, Florida. His journey culminated in 2008 when he became the first student at Florida International University (FIU) to earn a Ph.D. in public health. The 29-year-old Sklar had already earned a master?s in integrated marketing communication from FIU when he enrolled in the doctoral program at the Robert Stempel School of Public Health. He was one of 20 students in the inaugural class in the fall of 2005, and the first to graduate from the Health and Disease Prevention track. Sklar presently has a consulting practice in Aventura and is a health program manager in the Miami public school system. His real forte is weight loss and body management. Sklar is in tip-top condition, weighing in at 135 pounds. Only a decade ago, while attending Bialik High School, he tipped the scales at over 300 pounds. His intent now is to return to Montreal in the spring ?For one thing I want better health care,? he says. ?I believe I will get that in Montreal. I came back last month for a simple hernia surgery which would have cost me $2,500 in Florida.? Former Expos owner Jeffrey Loria is not too popular in Miami, where he owns the Major League Baseball?s Florida Marlins.
