The Centre de Santé et de Services Sociaux (CSSS) and the CLSC Cavendish are currently recruiting volunteers willing to donate two to four hours every week to visit senior citizens and the physically challenged in NDG and Montreal West. The work is not strenuous and is often done by other seniors. It involves helping with everyday duties like grocery shopping and cooking or simply having a pleasant talk with the client and playing a board game. ?Basically, we?re looking for people who can help out with friendly visiting, shopping or chatting,? said Edward Cho, who coordinates activities in the CLSC?s volunteer department. ?It?s a good way to meet other people and contribute to society.? Cho said there is no typical profile of a volunteer; the age range is wide and he is confident most will find the work to be rewarding and be able to make

I think I?m a lost cause.? Madoff, who is in her third year with the program, said signing up was not difficult; she was asked about her work and life experience, her areas of interest and had to go through a police background check. After two training sessions, she was ready to lend a helping hand. ?We do whatever comes up? whatever we feel like doing. She?s always happy to see me and sad when I leave,? Madoff said. ?I always tell people that I get more out of it than I?m giving ? I feel great afterwards and I know that I?m helping.? Cho said he is also seeking volunteers who can care for children at their office while parents are in meetings, support staff for the next flu vaccination campaign and bilingual receptionists. Those who speak languages other than English or French are especially welcome to join the friendly visiting program, as the borough is home to a wide range of cultural communities. ?About 60 percent of the people we serve come from other countries,? Cho said. ?We help people who speak Spanish or Russian, for example. We?re not looking for any specific language, but we try to match up (clients and volunteers) accordingly.?
