Cont?d from page 1 robbed the owner of a NDG dépanneur located on the corner of Sherbrooke and Hampton Streets. On the 31st of December, police say the suspect entered Rhee Byeung Sook?s convenience store, went up to the counter with what seemed to be a weapon and ordered Sook to give him the money in the store?s cash register. When she refused, he jumped over the counter and punched her several times in the face after which he took the money and left while forgetting his so-called weapon, a fake 9mm pistol. Andrew Cho, Sook?s son, said the entire incident was filmed by the store?s closed circuit video camera. He also said his mother was shaken by the incident but as of last weekend, she is now recovered and back at work in her store. ?I believe he (Ruggles) committed some other robberies,? said. Darrah. ?I?m not sure but we think he was the one who robbed another convenience store up in Côte St. Luc where he used a screwdriver to threaten the clerk. That could have been far worse than the plastic toy he used when he held up the dépanneur on Hampton and Sherbrooke.? When Darrah saw the video where Ruggles beat Madame Sook, he knew the police had to find Ruggles before he seriously hurt or even killed his victim. While police were looking for the suspect, he was also the subject of a pan-Canadian arrest warrant for assorted parole violations. ?So now it?s all over and he?s back inside,? said Darrah. ?Now the only thing we have to do is to find out exactly what he did while he was out on the street.? ? Full body scanners coming soon to Trudeau Airport

By Kevin Woodhouse The Suburban While the announcement last week by John Baird, federal Transport Minister and Rob Merrifield, Minister of State Transport last Tuesday in Ottawa that passengers can soon expect to see full body scanners at most Canadian airports, airline travelers will have to be patient with longer waits due to security checks. Passengers flying with Air Canada have been restricted to one carry on item, such as a laptop computer, diaper bag or small briefcase. With enhanced security measures at airports following the aborted terrorist act on Christmas Day in the U.S., both Canadian and American transportation agencies have new rules limiting carry on baggage as well as passengers being fully searched prior to boarding as well as screening areas. Travelers going to destinations in the United States are not allowed carry on bags at all, except for canes, cameras, and items for infants. The government is investing in the scanners that will be in place by the end of the month, giving passengers the option of a full body scan or a physical search. ?Given the recent terrorist incident on Dec. 25, our government is accelerating its actions to protect air travellers,? Baird said. ?The new full body scanners are the next generation of technology and balance safety and security with safeguards to privacy. They will allow for additional flexibility and enhancement to the security screening process.? Full body scanners can detect weapons constructed of metals and non-metals, ceramics as well as suspicious liquids or explosives. Another proposal the government is planning will be to implement passenger behavioru observation which, according to the Ministry of Transport, ?passenger behaviour observation screening consists of focusing on the passengers exhibiting suspicious behaviour, which could be an involuntary response to a fear of being discovered.?
