Hundreds attend Anglade funeral

By P.A. Sévigny The Suburban Last Saturday morning, when hundreds of friends, family and colleagues gathered to bid Adieu to both Georges and Mireille Anglade, it was a fitting tribute to the couple?s will to lead as full and productive a life as possible. ?Papa made us think big,? said Dominique, his daughter. ?He always encouraged us to express and defend our opinions ? a lesson he taught us well through his own actions and his own example.? Both George and Mireille were among the thousands of victims crushed and killed during Haiti?s recent earthquake. As a working academic, he was a respected professor and recognized as one of the founders of the city?s UQAM- L?Université du Québec à Montréal. As a political activist, he was made a political prisoner when he took a stand against Haitian dictator Papa Doc Duvalier and his brutal Ton-Ton Macoutes. As both a friend and a father, several could not hold back their tears as their close family friend and neighbour recalled the innumerable picnics and garden parties the couple held under a massive old elm tree in the backyard of their home in NDG. During his eulogy, Professor Claude Corbo, the university?s rector, told his audience how Anglade?s academic research built the solid foundations for the intellectual and cultural bridges which

Housefather, Mazzone, Berku and Brownstein are all lawyers by profession. ?One of the things we are looking at is what options we would have with respect to the budget, how to properly appeal to the municipal commission and what other options we may have. this time to do anything but the legal committee is much more than this. ?We are looking at a number of issues where the mayors of suburban municipalities have questions about law. We have legal issues all the time ? the City of Montreal will tell us something and we may not agree with it. For instance, it took the position that the ad hoc committee on the budget couldn?t hear the public security budget because it was only to go to the public security commission by law. That?s not the case. The police budget has to go the public security commission, but there?s nothing

As a political activist, Anglade was made a prisoner under the Duvalier regime and later served as a minister under President Aristide. He wrote several books about the social and economic history of Haiti and was often called for advice by the nation?s current president, Réné Préval. ?He was a great man,? said Liberal Opposition leader Michael Ignatieff as he was leaving the service to go to yet another funeral. ?He did a lot for Canada, he did a lot for Quebec and he did a lot for Haiti. Coderre said it was a sad day because it was full of funerals for people he knew who died in the Haitian catastrophe. ?We?re all Haitians today,? said Coderre. Anglade?s wife, Mireille, was also recognized as a loving mother, a world class economist and a dedicated feminist by Quebec Justice Juanita Westmoreland. During her warm eulogy for an old friend, Justice Westmoreland recalled a different time when women?s rights were often ignored if not openly ridiculed. ?She was a unique woman,? said Westmoreland. ?an effervescent woman who always brought a lot of joy into her immediate presence.? As a fitting tribute to the love and support she received from that stops it from also going to an ad hoc committee on the budget. There are legal issues on a daily basis that we get through the agglomeration in terms of the complicated nature of the mixed spending between the agglomeration and the central city. ?Another example would be the case of the water meter contract. We meet as a group of suburban municipalities to take positions related to anything that happened with respect to that, or to be kept abreast of what?s happening with the litigation [regarding the stopped incinerator contract] with Foster Wheeler.? ?
