ART EXHIBIT AT CSL LIBRARY

Côte St. Luc?s Eleanor London Library is presenting artworks by Amy A. Thompson and Amber Albrecht, until Feb. 28, the city announced. ?This exhibition, Invented Memories: Works by Amber Albrecht and Amy A. Thompson, explores themes of recollection, narratives and dreams,? says a city announcement. ?Amber Albrecht has created prints and drawings of absurdist situations, which stem from her recollection of the creatures, landscapes and impossible happenings of the storybooks from her childhood. ?In Amy A. Thompson?s mixed media series Glint, she depicts an imagined land. These dreamlike landscapes lead the viewer to reflect on the contrast between the intimacy of the self and the grand expanse of the cosmos.?

SNOW CLEARING PRIORITIES IN MOWEST

The town of Montreal West issued an advisory regarding snow removal, stating that ?for safety reasons, the town prioritizes snow clearing and snow removal on primary streets (commercial buildings, fire routes, school zones and municipal buildings). After these areas are cleaned, snow clearing/snow removal then proceeds to the secondary streets.? The town also pointed out that the snow dump ?is located behind the Municipal Arena on Bedbrook. Residents should be aware that this results in heavier truck traffic in the area during snow operations.? ? Joel Goldenberg 2 ? THE SUBURBAN, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2010

Radio-a-thon for Haiti delivers

94.7 Hits FM and Otis Grant Foundation fill up on food and clothes for earthquake survivors

By Kevin Woodhouse The Suburban The bitter wind and cold temperatures might have ruined the posters Marty Lamarre and his staff at 94.7 Hits FM had diligently set up Thursday night but the nasty weather did not deter West Island residents from coming through in full force to help the people of Haiti who have survived a horrible natural disaster. Last Friday at Task Electronics, 16,700 Trans Canada in Kirkland, 94.7 Hits FM and the Otis Grant Foundation held a 12 hour radio-a-thon to collect non-perishable food, clothes and bottled water that was given over to the Salvation Army who are going to distribute the much needed items to Haitian refugees. ?We cannot control the weather so all of our posters that we set up the night before blew away,? Lamarre told The Suburban at noon last Friday. ?But everything else, the things we could control, went very well.? When asked about holding the radioa-thon and the hardships of working outdoors to collect the items, Lamarre By Joel Goldenberg The Suburban David Tordjman, Côte St. Luc?s chief of public works and engineering, will be contributing to the rebuilding of Haiti after its devastating earthquake at the behest of Quebec?s Order of Engineers and the organization Engineers Without Borders. Tordjman will be going down to Port au Prince, and is doing so on his own time ? using two weeks of his vacation available to him. He told The Suburban last week that he is motivated by the Jewish principles of tikkun olam ? repairing the world ? and pikuach nefesh, helping other people in a time KEVIN WOODHOUSE / THE SUBURBAN Publisher: Michael Sochaczevski Associate Publisher: Sari Medicoff VP Business Development & Marketing: David Solomon Sales Manager: David Broadman Production Manager: Karen L. People stopped by with boxes of food of need. Tordjman said his family will remain here, as conditions in Haiti are dangerous. ?I was chosen as part of a group to go down,? he explained. ?Our first step will be to establish clean water systems and a safe environment for any refugee camp in the city of Port au Prince. Following that will be information collection for when I return, to do a reconstruction plans for specific areas. ?There is definitely going to be a lot of work done [from Montreal],? he added. ?It?s all volunteer for now, so I don?t know if I?ll have the opportunity to go down there again soon, but we?ll be doing a lot of planning and coordination for reconstruction. Roberto Del Papa, community relations officer for Station 1 who had done two previous tours in Haiti, spent a good part of the day collecting the donated goods along with many kind hearted helpers from Volunteer West Island who braved the outside chill to load up the 53-foot truck that, by the end of the radio-a-thon at 6 p.m., had been filled thanks to the generosity of area residents. Lac St. Louis MP Francis Scarpaleggia was also on hand for some time during the day. Otis Grant was busy at Riverdale High School where students had given so much stock that Grant had to rent a separate truck just to pack what the students had given. The West Island Muslim Community really came through when they presented Lamarre with six full palettes of new clothing, valued at $75,000. Avon Canada also gave numerous racks of clothes that stretched a total of 40 feet in goods. Lamarre felt ?humbled? by the experience because ?all of this was done thanks to the involvement of the local community who want to give back to others.? n

coordination can be done from a distance. I did a lot of that in my previous job, when I was in project management at SNC Lavalin. Those are the tools I?ll be using when I?m back here. While on site, I?ll be evaluating whether some areas can be saved and which can?t be, possible relocation sites for some of the schools and if their rebuilding cities, to make sure they build them properly with the future in mind.? Tordjman said that from what he has seen on television and read, coupled with his engineering expertise, he believes reconstruction will take a decade, ?easily. Editorial Contributors: Maria I.
