Police release St. Laurent stats
By Joel Goldenberg The Suburban Brown was a resident member of the town?s planning committee and was involved in developing Montreal West?s urban plan, the subject of two lively public meetings and much debate last year. Tasker-Brown told the council meeting that the town planning committee met in January, and was preparing a survey targeting the business commu- Bi-monthly statistics for St. Laurent police station 7 were released at the February council meeting, including information for the months of November and December 2009. According to the report, Station 7 police performed 817 hours of foot patrols in those two months, including 96 hours at the Côte Vertu and Du College métros stations. ?Our plan for visibility was directed mainly at neighbourhoods, métro stations and taxi drivers,? the report says. ?A taxi driver from St. Laurent had disappeared and was found murdered in another municipality. These providers of public transit are occasionally the target of criminals.? The report adds for all of 2009, police conducted 3,500 hours of foot patrols, of which 730 were dedicated to the two métro stations. ?We will start the new year with the same objective.? The report also included crime statistics comparing 2009 to 2008. Robberies with violence of individuals, businesses and banks rose from 89 in 2008 to 129 last year ? a 44.94 percent increase. Sexual aggression dropped from 48 to 45 incidents (a 6.25 percent decrease), thefts involving motor vehicles increased from 1497 to 1603 (a 7.08 percent increase). Break and enters into homes and businesses increased 6.3 percent from 778 to 827. In terms of accidents, fatalities decreased from two to one, injuries increased from 236 to 264, accidents involving material damage fell from 671 to 531, hit and runs fell from 1,188 to 985 and those involving impaired faculties rose from 65 to 68 incidents. During this month?s meeting, council regular Sofia Vriniotis asked if people were victimized by criminals in particular areas of the borough, such as around métro stations or parks. ?Do you find there?s a correlation, when you do have foot patrols, that the incidents goes down?? asked the Decarie Blvd. merchant. Mayor Alan DeSousa replied that there were a series of thefts last March, and the criminal in that case was caught. ?I don?t think there?s a particular area, problem-wise, and when there is, action is taken,? he added. Vriniotis had also asked about the meaning in the statistics of the term ?vol qualifés.? Station 7 commander Éric La Penna, who was also at the council meeting, explained that ?vol qualifés? means that violence is committed in the course of the theft. Regarding areas where crime might be more prevalent, ?you could be saying there?s more crime at the métro, but you have to consider there are a lot more people and a lot more targets,? the commander added. ?So when you look at the probability of being victimized, you?re probable safer at the métro than anywhere else. So yes, you would have higher numbers of crimes at the métro, but considering the number of people who pass there and the number of opportunities, it?s actually a safer place than any street ? not only in our borough, it?s pretty much everywhere else.? n nity. She said a survey for residents was sent out a few years ago, asking what they liked about the town and what they would like to see changed. ?That survey was used as the basis for the development of the urban planning program,? she added. ?Because a big part of the (2010 Accent GL 3-door model shown)* (2010 Elantra Touring GLS Sport model shown) * urban planning program is the town revitalization, we?re now looking to consult with the business community as to what they would like to see done in the business district. ?We are also interested in getting a business association up and running again, to get them more SMART ADVANTAGE!
