AHEPA holds Valentines? gala fundraiser

By Joel Goldenberg The Suburban The American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA) held a gala Valentines fundraiser Saturday night at the Intercontinental Hotel, attracting some 200 guests ? including political and Greek community notables. The funds raised were for the creation of a special classroom for kids at the Shriners Hospital, and to expand the resource centre at the Giant Steps School for autistic children. The honourary chairpeople of the event were Senator Leo Housakos and lawyer Tom Pentefountas. Live entertainment was provided by SophistOccasion. Nicholas Katalifos, co-chairman of the Giant Steps Foundation and an AHEPA member, told The Suburban that AHEPA is well-established in the Greek community and originated in the U.S. in the 1920s. ?Its goal is to promote educational and cultural issues within the Greek community, but also to do a bit of outreach to the greater community, talking about what Hellenism is all about and supporting causes like this,? he Publisher: Michael Sochaczevski Associate Publisher: Sari Medicoff VP Business Development & Marketing: David Solomon Sales Manager: David Broadman Production Manager: Karen L. Katalifos added that AHEPA committed to raise $250,000 for the Shriners Hospital classroom, to benefit children who are long-term patients. ?That has been going on for five years and we?re about halfway through the goal.? AHEPA also began supporting Giant Steps about two years ago. ?We have a resource centre where a couple of thousand parents and professionals come through every year, seeking information and help. It?s the only school of its type in Quebec, and runs a bilingual program.?

Nurses return from Haiti

By Dan Delmar The Suburban After one week of treating the wounded in Port au Prince, a group of Montreal nurses reflected with colleagues last week on an experience that was often rewarding and sometimes frustrating. The 10 Jewish General Hospital (JGH) nurses volunteered for the mission, which was sponsored by ONEX- ONE, a non-profit aid group, and the Claudine and Stephen Bronfman Family Foundation. They spoke of Haitians surviving incredible hardships, while others sought to take advantage of the downtrodden. From the moment they touched down, it was clear the group had landed in the middle of a chaotic situation. The nurses unpacked some 400 boxes of medical supplies themselves, before taking a couple of wrong turns on the road to their base camp, an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) mobile hospital. After getting their first sleep in Haiti at 4 a.m., they woke only hours later to attend an early-morning briefing with the IDF. ?We didn?t have much information about where we were going,? said nurse Anne Liang, who was concerned about security. ?Once we knew we would be with the IDF, we knew we would be fine.? Lyng, P.A. Sévigny, Samantha St. Jules, Kevin Woodhouse ?It?s a great cause,? said Pentefountas. ?It?s a chance for members of the Greek community to support charitable organizations that are not strictly limited to Greeks and to give something back to the society that accepted them so graciously for the last 100 years.? Senator Housakos said that ?AHEPA, which I?ve been a proud member of for many years, is an organization that has supported many worthy causes, and no cause is more worthy than the Shriners Hospital and the Giant Steps Foundation.? n Liang, who has three years on the job, told The Suburban that it was often frustrating to know that patients could have easily been better treated, if only they were at a Montreal hospital. Nurses ran out of key painkillers and were treating serious fractures with Tylenol. The devastation was easier to handle after seeing the resilient spirit of Haitians she met. ?Personally, I wasn?t as upset as when I as watching the news,? Liang said. ?People were carrying on with their lives? everybody was very positive and trying to rebuild.? See NURSES, page 8 Editorial Contributors: Maria I.
