DeSousa to activist: Change brand of protest

By Joel Goldenberg The Suburban St. Laurent mayor Alan DeSousa chastised longtime activist Murray Levine for a one-man protest the latter held months ago, relating to the annual Tour de L?Île bicycling event. Levine, who has been lobbying for decades to have the Tour be an event for charity, is known among local politicians for his hold-prettymuch-nothing-back style. He had a longtime beef with Côte St. Luc several years ago over the removal of pink ribbons regarding breast cancer near the CP tracks, and for the removal of political signs during an election campaign. But when Levine appeared at last week?s St. Laurent borough meeting, his issue had nothing to do with the Tour. Instead, he pointed out that NDG-Lachine MP Marlene Jennings presented a motion pointing out that provinces like Alberta and New Brunswick exempt their public healthcare sectors from the federal goods and services tax (GST). Her motion called on the government to ? give a 100 percent rebate of the GST to the entire public healthcare sector? and to ?exempt hospitals from remitting GST collected by them in the course of their operations to the Canada Revenue Agency.? The motion asks that the funds go to the hospital foundations to buy medical equipment to ?save lives, ease suffering and stimulate the economy.? Levine asked DeSousa to bring the issue to the Montreal executive committee, and said other mayors have agreed to at least send letters. DeSousa replied that he would take a look at the resolution, but pointed out that, historically, governments have wanted to limit GST exemptions. He said there could be other problems as well. ?That said, we take note of what you?ve deposited, and we?ll see what is the appropriate way to deal with it,? the mayor said. But just as Levine was prepared to retake his seat in the city hall council chamber, DeSousa had more to say. ?We do not appreciate your parading up and down Marcel Laurin with a sandwich board, with all types of nice things about myself,? DeSousa said, adding that he does not mind criticism. ?But it does neither you nor your cause any good, it doesn?t do you credit. The words were offensive ? not to me, I have a pretty thick skin.? The mayor added that the type of protest is offensive to the local community, with young families, and does not belong in St. Laurent. ?We have young kids, people who care about the community and have a sense of community values. I just thought it was woefully inappropriate.? Levine told The Suburban

Counter traffic violators: MoWest?s Mazzone

By Joel Goldenberg The Suburban Montreal West councillor Dino Mazzone says he is seeing too many motorists rolling through stop signs in the town and speeding, and is seeking measures against this. Mazzone, in charge of the public security portfolio, told the January council meeting that residents and those from outside the town should be mindful about stop signs, speed limits and children. ?It infuriates and saddens me to see motorists barreling through stop signs near school districts and flying down our city streets,? he said. ?Such behaviour, in my mind, is unacceptable and unconscionable and, to some extent, criminal. ?I am communicating with the commander of police station 9 to ask him and his team to redouble their efforts in strictly enforcing the law and hand out infractions where need be. In particular, I want close attention paid to the schools ? I live right next to Elizabeth Ballantyne and it?s just horrendous to see [the violations] every morning.? Mazzone also spoke about graffiti in the town ? a problem he has been concerned about for a long time. He pointed out that the town has a standing contract with a company that removes it from public property that is attacked. ?If any of the residents of our town see any graffiti on public or even private property ? the private property gets dealt with separately ? they are more than encouraged to indicate as much to the town, either Pat Mann directly or someone in our administration.? n that the poster negatively portrayed DeSousa?s intelligence and compassion. But DeSousa said the sandwich board also had a reference to him that included a profanity beginning with the letter f. ?I?ve carried that same sign in front of Dollard des Ormeaux city hall and Pointe Claire,? Levine said. ?I asked those cities to ban [the (2010 Accent GL 3-door model shown)* (2010 Elantra Touring GLS Sport model shown) * Tour] I think Alan DeSousa is a wonderful person. Before he ran for the party in power, he was in the opposition and I saw in The Suburban that he put on a fundraiser for cancer research. I figured he?s the perfect person to approach, he?s got a good heart. I asked him to ban the Tour for not cooperating with charity. St. Laurent is a big area. He told SMART ADVANTAGE!
