NEWS & ANALYSIS
?We don?t want a booming night life in Montreal West?
Montreal West council was firm recently in its desire not to have a bar established in the town, in response to a request from resident and former council candidate Guido Mariani. Mariani said he wanted council to enact a spot zoning change, one that would only apply to the area in question and not the town as a whole. He asked that the project be reconsidered by Montreal West?s Planning Advisory Committee, which recommends to council whether to approve or refuse projects, zoning changes and minor exemptions to bylaws on properties. Mariani said the bar in question would be a place where patrons can watch a hockey game, and where food could be served although food would not be the focus of the establishment. ?It would be a sports bar, so it would be classified as a bar and not a restaurant,? said councillor Julie Tasker-Brown, in charge of the administration and urban planning portfolio on council. She said Montreal West?s zoning does not allow for a bar anywhere on the town?s territory. ?I understand that,? said Mariani, ?That?s why I?m asking for the spot zoning, not for the whole city, just for a spot that?s in an industrial zone.? But mayor Beny Masella said that even if the proposal went back to the Planning Advisory Committee (PAC), council already voted unanimously against changing its bylaw to allow a bar, even in the case of spot zoning. Still, Mariani, who said the spot zoning as detailed in town documents was inaccurate, was told he could resubmit it to the PAC. ?If there is any ambiguity at all, it will be eliminated,? Masella said. Mariani protested that if everyone acted as does Montreal West, there would be no venue for a bar on the island. He added that the location is in an industrial area. ?It?s near residential properties as well, just up the street,? said Tasker-Brown. ?I guess what the council is saying is we don?t want a booming night life in Montreal West.? ?
