DARING TO CARE
GENERATIONS
Cont?d from page 2 it?s pretty consistently over a dollar. To me, that?s a big increase.? Food is going up in price, as well, including staple foods for families. ?The very basic things we need every day for snack and light lunch programs is the same type that families would be buying ? even middle class. And everywhere, it?s a little increased. But for the children?s nourishment ? green and red peppers, for example, it?s almost $2 apiece. It?s crazy! There was a stir fry at the cooking class of one of our schools, and I bought three green peppers for close to $5. But I was told there were actually six groups of two at each burner to cook, and she wanted one for each. It would cost $15 or $16. ?Milk went up a few percent. You think it?s not a lot, but when you buy milk and cheese like I do, and everything else, it affects every product.? Bercovici says he also worries about families that bought a home, with low interest rates. ?What happens when the rate goes up, and a lot of people tell me they have variable rates. I see the impact, so if they?re paying $500 or $800 a month, and suddenly they have to pay another $150 which was not planned for, that?s another major problem. There?s inflation, across the board.? Bercovici said more support from the public is needed ? at the time of the interview, he was worried about a lower than usual turnout at Generations Foundations? now traditional fundraising breakfasts at La Stanza ? participating costs $10 ? and less participation at a fundraising auction. ?When I look at donations, I can tell you honestly just about everybody is giving. But the person who gave you $500 is now giving Managing Director Dr. Charles Rawas COURTESY OF CTV you $300. We?re hurting ? we don?t get any government assistance, we don?t get Centraide. Natalie and I have to get out there ? we raise funds through a tremendous effort with events like the breakfast or the plays . ?What we need is for the community to help us because we buy all of our food. We have to get kids fresh food every day, and sadly speaking, because of my resources now, I?m not giving the kids the fresh vegetables and fruit that I used to, because we really, honestly can?t afford it. ?I don?t know how poor people make out!? Bercovici said with distress. ?It?s tough!.... Natalie and I are putting every ounce of energy into this to make sure we get enough money for every kid to eat. ?After all, every kid likes to eat every day. And we don?t want them falling asleep at their desks .? Bercovici also told The Suburban that the flu is affecting how it provides food through schools. ?The epidemic makes it very uncertain how many and which kids are going to be in school, and when you have perishable goods, it can cause chaos for us,? he explained, ?especially when you have so many schools that we?re dealing with, it?s hard to keep track of all that because that?s out of the ordinary ? we can take care of the ordinary.? Bercovici says that Generations depends on logistics, as it is operated by very few people. ?Everything has to be in place, and everybody has to do their thing, so if we spend our time trying to check ? as in, are you rotating your milk ? it takes time, we want the kids to have particularly good food.? Bercovici added that the staff at Generations Foundation wants to avoid getting sick themselves, and they have already been inoculated. n
