DARING TO CARE

Some of the people who live to give

Dealing with non-profit organizations that help the needy in Montreal has been a regular task for me over the years as a columnist for The Suburban. I must say that it gives me a good feeling to cover their events and contribute to such good deeds as feeding and clothing the poor and hungry who live amongst us. As we prepare to say good-bye to the year 2009, let?s tip our hat to these extraordinary people. Sid Stevens and Earl De la Perralle: Can it really have been 60 years ago that childhood friends Stevens and De la Perralle got together with a few friends to form the Clark Street Sun? The organization soon became the Sun Youth Organization which is always there to lend a hand, be it distributing food baskets, handling crime prevention tasks or stepping in when any type of emergency in the city occurs. Adrian and Natalie Bercovici: For a couple of retirees, the Bercovicis do not know the meaning of the word ?relaxation?. Their Generations Boulevard Décarie Avenue Coolbrook Avenue Clanranald DÉCARIE SQUARE 6900, DÉCARIE BLVD., CÔTE SAINT-LUC, PQ. (514)731-6118 MON. - WED.: 9:30 A.M. - 6:00 P.M. Foundation serves hot meals to hungry school children, operates a summer camp and assists kids in group homes with orthodontics. Their three annual fundraising breakfasts, one at the St. Viateur Bagel Café and two at Le Stanza in St. Léonard, are guaranteed sellouts. Judy Stevens: In the winter of 1989 three women were moved to collect warm clothing and food for the homeless. They put out a plea to the public via a newspaper article and the response was overwhelming. People called to volunteer, to donate clothes, to sort clothes, to donate food and to help with deliveries. Share the Warmth was born and more than 20 years director Stevens and her team are still going strong, providing meals to hungry students, collecting clothing and even giving out school supply kits each August. Robert Vokey: In 1997 Vokey, representing the J.W. McConnell Family Foundation, attended a conference in the U.S. and heard about an interesting fundraising organization called Tennessee Community Shares. The concept, to create a fundraising organization designed to assist community groups within a small geographic area, would be the first in Canada. Working with then Liberal

Matthew Pearce: As the director general of the Old Brewery Mission, Pearce heads an organization which offers important humanitarian services such as a safe refuge from the street, nourishing meals and warm showers. They also provide clients with real solutions to homelessness through dynamic transitional programs and residential centres. ?The natural progression of the Old Brewery Mission will be to play a larger role in social housing either on our own or in partnership with other social housing initiatives in Montreal,? he says. ?The future of homelessness reduction is not in shelters but in housing.? Pierre Legault, Frédéric Sawyer, Brian Martin and Peter Gantous: In 1984 these four gentlemen established Moisson Montreal, Quebec?s food bank. Supported by a network of nearly 150 agri-food suppliers, around 674,000 kilos of foodstuffs of all kinds are circulated every month through a
