Police foundation helps charities
By P.A.Sévigny The Suburban Last Thursday morning, as the temperature dropped into the lower depths, only the warmth of human kindness could salvage whatever heat was left in the NDG Food Depot. ?This is the time when I like to do some Christmas shopping,? said Madame Ptitsa, the NDG Food Depot?s Turkey lady after SPVM Constable Peter Mendelos pushed her shopping cart full of frozen turkeys into the depot. With only a week to go before Christmas, Fiona Keats, the food depot?s director, knew it was going to be a good day because she knew, come Christmas morning, those turkeys would be a welcome sight on more than a few west end kitchen tables. ?It?s the least I can do,? said Ptitsa. ?I spent as much on those turkeys as I did on my grandchildren.? When SPVM Station Commander Daniel Leduc followed Mendelos and his loaded cart into the Food Depot, the morning was turning into the Food Depot?s lucky day. Mendelos said Leduc and other officers working out of NDG?s local police station know all about the work being done to help feed the poor in NDG. Once they told La Fondation des Employé(e)s de la SPVM -the SPVM?s own charitable foundation, about the depot?s long history as one of the district?s major food banks, the foundation?s directors, including Police Chief Yvan Delorme, decided the NDG Food Depot deserved a special check for Christmas.
