Federal, provincial reps take part in ceremony

By Joel Goldenberg The Suburban Côte St. Luc held a ceremony during its recent Canada Day festivities to add a new plaque to its Human Rights Walkway at Trudeau Park, honouring those who helped in the effort to liberate Jews from oppressive governments in the Soviet Union, Syria and Ethiopia. Previous honourees have included individuals, such as Holocaust heroine Miep Gies, who helped hide famous diarist Anne Frank and her family from the Nazis for two years in Holland; anti-apartheid heroine Helen Suzman, Universal Declaration of Human Rights drafter René Cassin, former Hampstead resident and rights pioneer John Humphrey and Quebec Court of Appeal Chief Justice Jules Deschênes, among others. The event followed the annual Canadian citizenship ceremony. This year, recently appointed citizenship judge Marcel Tremblay, the former Côte des Neiges/NDG councillor, swore in some 30 new citizens from 10 countries.
