Minister with a mission
International Trade's Van Loan discusses 'historic"'EU pact on West Island visit
By Beryl Wajsman, Editor and Kevin Woodhouse The Suburban Peter Van Loan, Canada's Minister for International Trade, is clearly a man on - and with - a mission. The priorities of his Ministerial agenda are ambitious, even historic, and he attacks the challenges with vigour and obvious relish. On a visit to Pierrefonds-Dollard riding last week, he took time to share some of his views in an exclusive interview with The Suburban. Though our bi-lateral relations with our biggest trading partner, the United States, are always paramount, Van Loan was keen to talk about an initiative with our second biggest partner, the European Union. He is looking forward to the completion of negoti-

City to get new police chief
By P.A. Sévigny The Suburban During last week's brief press conference in the Maisonneuve Room at Montreal's city hall, Mayor Gérald Tremblay took several minutes to explain at least some of the factors he considered before he finally told the assembled media that veteran police commander Marc Parent would be his choice to be the city's next chief of police. Most observers said Tremblay did the right thing when he appointed a selection committee made up of five people in which Tremblay's own Union party members would be in a clear minority position. "You have to give the man credit for that," said Westmount Mayor Peter Trent. "Apart from Verdun Mayor Claude Trudel, Tremblay knew his own administration could not control the committee's final decision." Tremblay seemed relieved when he finally revealed who would be the city's next chief of police. Tremblay inferred that Parent could be the man who could, would and finally should open the windows and let some new air flow through See POLICE CHIEF, page 20
