B?nai Brith Canada audit: 373 anti-Semitic incidents in Quebec in ?09

By Joel Goldenberg The Suburban B?nai Brith Canada?s annual audit of anti-Semitic incidents across Canada lists 373 anti-Jewish incidents in Quebec in 2009, up from 245 in last year?s audit. Of the Quebec incidents, 319 took place in Montreal. In Canada as a whole, 1,264 cases were reported. According to the audit, anti-Jewish harassment increased by 60 percent in Montreal and included ?anti-Semitic slurs in educational and workplace settings, web-based hate activity with a Quebec connection and anti-Semitic flyers being distributed throughout the neighbourhood of Outremont.? And, as also reported in The Suburban last August, swastikas were daubed on private and public properties in Côte St. Luc and Hampstead. Violent incidents increased from two cases in 2008 to seven in 2009. Some of the 2009 incidents included a man wearing a kippah (skullcap) being assaulted on a street, seniors in a Jewish residential building receiving the message ?1,000 Jews will die?, a visibly Jewish man being beaten in a park, a sign in Pointe Claire repeating a conspiracy theory about Jews and 9/11 and a flyer being distributed depicting Jews as ?genocidal murderers.? ?
