From local leagues to the world stage

By Mark Lidbetter The Suburban It was fitting that the Greater Montreal Athletic Association held its? winter championships in hockey and basketball during the final days of the Vancouver Olympics. Competitive fires burn bright in every participant, regardless of the level of play but more important is the sportsmanship, honour and life lessons learned in victory and defeat. It is from the grassroots levels of sports that future Olympians emerge, especially in the surge of interest spawned in an Olympic year. The commitment of the student athletes mirrors that of athletes in the numerous team sports and individual disciplines that make-up our vibrant amateur athletic scene. Silver medalist Jennifer Heil commented that it amazed her that a Quebec based ski club that would get one or two inquiries about membership a week

CSL-TV UPDATE

Côte St. Luc?s recently inaugurated CSL-TV, with video of noteworthy city events and issues, now contains two on-camera messages by Mayor Anthony Housefather. One is on the increase in property taxes, pretty much wholly due to tax increases by the Montreal agglomeration council. The other is on the $11.5 million contributions Côte St. Luc received from the federal and Quebec provincial government to build a $17 million intergenerational aquatic centre. The videos can be seen at vimeo.com/channels/csltv. (For those with older computers who find the video hitching, change the high-definition (HD) setting from ?on? to ?off.?)

HAMPSTEAD LADIES NIGHT

Hampstead is holding its third annual Ladies Night Wednesday March 10, at 7 p.m., celebrating International Women?s Day. ?This year?s special event will give ladies the chance to get cash for unwanted gold/silver jewelry,? says a town announcement. ?Gold Guys Canada of Laurentian Jewelers will evaluate gold/silver jewelry and hand over CASH for the items while donating a percentage of their evenings? purchases to Hampstead sport programs for children.? ?Gold Parties are all the rage and we are happy to be able to organize this event with the Gold Guys for our residents,? says councillor Bonnie Feigenbaum, the evening?s hostess. ?We thank Gold Guys for the generosity for pledging 10 percent of their purchases of the night to our sports program. I encourage all our ladies to join us for a fun evening and change their gold for cash in support of our athletes.? For more information, please call 514- 369-8260.

MOWEST POOL

Montreal West councillor Elizabeth Ulin, in charge of the recreation portfolio on council, provided some updates at the February council meeting on the town?s pool. ?New programs include a Young Lifeguard?s Club for 10 and 12-year-olds who have finished their swimming lessons, and Parent-Toddler swimming lessons for two to four-year-olds and their moms and dads,? she said. ?We?ll be refurbishing the pool?s heating system to install a better temperature control device which will allow simultaneous operation of our solar and gas heaters. This will make the pool more comfortable and more energy-efficient.? ?
