Cont?d from page 1 Olympic experience had been like while dealing with the sudden death of her mother Thérèse in Vancouver at the age of 55 from a massive heart attack. ?I?m extremely proud of the incredible battle I won in Vancouver,? Rochette said. ?I left having in mind I was going to war to win a battle but the battle was obviously tougher than expected. Yes I lost someone very important in my life but she lives through me and what I want in the future is for her legacy to go on. I know she would want me to smile and enjoy my Olympic moment. It took me a long time to try to separate the athlete from the person but I know that 10 years from now I can look back knowing I did everything I could and not be thinking I should have.? Rochette became the first Quebec skater to medal in the singles category at the winter games and the first Canadian woman to reach the podium at the Winter Olympics in 22 years. Support and encouragement came from around the globe but the one that reached Joannie the most came from an eight-year-old girl. ?The same thing had happened to

Cont?d from page 1 were traveling west on the green line when two STM inspectors approached them to ask for their POP-Proof Of Purchase stubs. When Samantha Hyman-Roberts told them she had already thrown her ticket away, the officers asked her to step out of the car at the next stop. When asked why, as she wanted to go home, the young woman said the officers immediately pinned her to the ground and arrested her. The situation immediately degenerated into violence and all three women received tickets for obstructing justice. Apart from the original $250 ticket, court costs and administration fees mean the ticket adds up to $324 which means it costs a lot of money to get into an argument with Montreal?s Métro security personnel. Hyman-Roberts also received a $214 ticket for failing to show her POP stub. ?If she didn?t have the POP stub, she?s guilty and she will have to pay the fine,? said STM spokesman AnneMarie Rouette. ?Whatever

To accomplish her Olympic goal, Rochette thanked numerous people for helping to bring her to her Olympic medal, starting with her parents. Rochette went on to credit longtime coach Manon Perron with helping to construct an on-ice comfort zone the week of competition. Not only did Rochette earn the people say, the new OPUS program has been in place for months and after all of last year?s publicity, people should know they have to keep their POP stubs if they don?t want to risk paying a fine.? While Rouette said it would be difficult to talk about what people mean by ?obstruction of justice?, she did want to stress how there was ?absolutely no question? of racial profiling in the STM. ?We have a ?zero tolerance? policy for racial profiling and we intend to keep it that way,? she said. As for the POP tickets, she reminded The Suburban that the city?s cash-strapped transit system was losing up to $20 million per year due to incidental fraud done on a daily basis. Prior to the new OPUS system, there was no way the STM could control the situation so the city?s transit system continued to lose money on a daily basis. ?Now the only difference is people must keep their POP,? said Rouette, ?and after only a few months, we?re already starting to see a difference.? ¢ ANDREW SOONG / THE SUBURBAN bronze but she was selected as one of two recipients of a Terry Fox Award, sharing that with Petra Majdic of Slovenia who won a bronze in her cross-country skiing event after falling in a training run, bruising her ribs and puncturing a lung. On the final day of the games, Rochette was selected to be Canada?s flag bearer at the closing ceremonies. ?When the C.O.C. (Canadian Olympic Committee) selected me to be the flag bearer my first thought was why me, was a bronze medal good enough (for the honour)?? she said. ?When they assured me I accepted with great enthusiasm. That provided me with an intense and joyful Olympic moment.? Rochette touched on the kind of person her late mother was, ?My mom was very reserved and didn?t like having any attention (from the media) on her,? she said. ?I would also ask for privacy for the next week.? Once Rochette has had some private time with her family, she will take to the ice and begin training once again. ?I look forward to getting back to competition in a couple of weeks and touring with Stars on Ice in the spring,? she said. ? Centre for Research Action on Race Relations (CRARR), Fo Niemi granted Rouette may have a point about the transit system?s problems with its delinquent riders but he also believes the system will have to clarify what it means when people are being ticketed for ?obstruction of justice.? As Taejhia James, one of the two young women who were with Samantha Hyman-Roberts when she was arrested put it, ?I felt like I was being treated like I was an animal or a slave? No three young white girls would have been assaulted like this.? As far as Niemi is concerned, there seems to be a specific pattern of interaction between STM officials and the city?s black community ? especially its young black community. ?The use of force, the use of verbal intimidation? it?s all part of a pattern of interaction with the city?s STM people which deserves close investigation,? he said. ?Whatever happens, we must define what the authorities mean when they accuse people of ?obstructing justice.?? ? 1 99 ea.
