Fraser-Hickson?s Dinsmore ?always optimistic?

FHL looking at other sites after church project fails

By Dan Delmar The Suburban Despite a major setback, the president of the Fraser- Hickson Library says he is looking at new sites to house the NDG institution and hasn?t given up hope after the Anglican Diocese of Montreal put the brakes on a resurrection plan. FHL members have now seen the three-year mark come and go since they have had access to the library; its Kensington Ave. facility closed on Feb. 28, 2007. Groundbreaking on a new home at the site of the Trinity Memorial Church on Marlowe Ave. was set to begin, but soaring costs led the Diocese to pull their support. ?I can?t say why the Diocese elected to have our arrangement expire,? Dinsmore told The Publisher: Michael Sochaczevski Associate Publisher: Sari Medicoff VP Business Development & Marketing: David Solomon Sales Manager: David Broadman Production Manager: Karen L. Cross Classified Manager: Charmaine Worrell Credit Manager: Carol Balinsky Suburban, conceding that ?there were some very real financial challenges for them.? Speaking for the Diocese, Bishop Barry Clarke told The Gazette recently that their contribution of $500,000 would have had to triple in order for the project to go through. The FHL had been paying the Diocese to rent out their basement, where the new facility would have been built, but the 7575 Trans-Canada Highway, Suite 105, St. Laurent, QC H4T 1V6 (514) 484-1107 (Fax) 484-9616 suburban@thesuburban.com www.thesuburban.com Some images and graphics Copyright 2009 Michael Publishing and its licensors. The failed project has cost the church more than $200,000 and the FHL nearly $500,000. Many municipalities have little-known bylaws

By Joel Goldenberg The Suburban Côte St. Luc has many well-known and publicized bylaws ? perhaps its most famous are its overnight parking prohibition between 3 and 6 a.m., its pioneering requirement for bicyclists to wear helmets and also innovative ban on smoking in public places, well before Quebec made the latter province-wide law. Other bylaws are obvious and by no means unique ? putting out garbage at the correct time, keeping your dog leashed and out of parks, and no unauthorized parking in handicap zones. Côte des Neiges-NDG did offer a grant to help with operating costs, but those funds will only be made available once the library is open to the public. Dinsmore said he won?t ask the borough for more money. ?We?ve had a very good relationship with the borough,? he said. ?We didn?t ask. We felt their support was sufficient.? Describing the unsuccessful church project as a ?setback,? Dinsmore said that he is still confident that a new site for the FHL will be found eventually. Although he would not go into specifics, he said a handful of locations in NDG are being looked at. ?I?m always optimistic? I hope very much that people will be optimistic about our future.? n Editorial Contributors: Maria I. Côte St. Luc?s website (www.cotesaintluc.org) lists many of them. In that city, you can?t: 1. ?Keep live farm animals or fowl on your land,? so do not expect to find any live cows, chickens or turkeys in local backyards and homes. There have been no such incidences in Côte St. Luc, The Suburban has been told, at least in recent years.
