Summer camp season is around the corner

There?s a breed of summer camp that doesn?t involve the outdoor activities we usually associate with the camping experience. No campfire, no mud, no bugs but the kind of camp that usually take place indoors. ? Page 22

Amal?s story

?All I want to know is why??

Woman hit with police force and fines for putting a bag on a bench

By Beryl Wajsman, Editor The Suburban The Arabic name Amal has three meanings. Hope, expectation, aspiration. Those three words are a good synopsis of what Pointe Claire resident and Concordia human relations and psychology student Amal Asmar dares to dream of these days after police harassed her, roughed her up and left her with some $1,000 in fines. She hopes for justice; expects an apology and aspires for an answer to her poignant plea of, ?all I want to know is why?? As she completes her studies and continues with her job searches, the mental scars she still carries compel her to keep this dream alive. Her ?crimes?? Sitting on a bench in front of Alexis Nihon Plaza with her bag on the bench and yelling when police officers twisted her arms and wrists as they hustled her into a police cruiser because of it. She suspects that there may be one other ?crime?: that she had the wrong looks, at the wrong place, at the wrong time. Amal, born and raised in Montreal, is perfectly bilingual with no trace of an accent in English or French. She loves to walk her beloved Black Lab Freddy in the See AMAL, page 3 Amal Asmar with her dog Freddy, an 8 year old Husky/Labrador mix.

CSL passes Bill 104 resolution

By Joel Goldenberg The Suburban Côte St. Luc council made a rare venture beyond its municipal bounds, passing a resolution Monday night calling on Quebec to respect the Supreme Court?s judgment regarding the province?s English school access law and not further limit access to English public education. In recent days, Quebec nationalists have protested the Supreme Court?s 2009 ruling against Bill 104, the law which prevents parents from using the private English school route as a means to access the public English system. While ruling against the law, the court gave Quebec a year to come up with new legislation, thus postponing the effect of the judgment ? that government response is expected in the very near future. Nationalists have even called for further restrictions on English school access. ?We?re doing this because, even though it is not a municipal issue, it impacts upon families living in the city of Côte St. Luc,? Mayor Anthony Housefather said. ?It impacts upon many immigrant families See BILL 104, page 2 Camry Hybrid
